Be sure to:

* Wash your hands frequently when caring for your little one (especially after going to the bathroom and changing diapers).

* Make sure all visitors wash their hands prior to touching your baby.

* Make sure visitors are not ill when coming to visit.

* Avoid large crowds for at least 1 month after your baby is born.

Help protect your baby from accidental injury.

Be sure to:

* Always place your baby in an appropriate car seat when traveling in any vehicle.

* Never leave baby unattended (especially in the car, bathtub, changing table, or on any other elevated area).

* Always keep one hand on your baby when in the bathtub, on the changing table, or on any elevated area.

* Never shake your baby. Shaken baby syndrome can cause blindness, brain damage or death.

* Place baby on his/her back to sleep to reduce the likelihood of sudden infant death syndrome.

* Always test the temperature of the water before giving a bath.

* Use a non-skid mat in the bathtub.

* Never prop a bottle when feeding your baby.

* Never place pacifier on a string around baby’s neck.

* Check pacifiers and nipples for holes and tears frequently.

* Always test the temperature of breast milk/formula prior to feeding your baby.

* Never leave pets or young children alone with your baby.

* Ensure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly.

* Do not carry infant when you are cooking or holding hot drinks.

* Make sure that your baby’s toys are unbreakable.

Get Rid Of Temper Tantrums

November 15, 2009 by

If you have young children then the chances are you will have had to endure the sometimes cringe-worthy temper tantrums they sometimes throw. It can cause other people present to laugh at the sight of your child rolling around the floor screaming because they cannot fit something in a hole or because you will not let them have a sweet or be able to do something. But it is embarrassing for the parent.

The amusement from the first couple of incidences will soon turn to the parent being perplexed by the tantrums. Mainly from not being able to know what to do to prevent the child from having a tantrum or not knowing what to do to once in the throes of one.

You may have to deal with the tantrum differently when out in public or at someone else’s house. Whereas at home you may send them to their bedroom or to a quiet place, there will not be this option if at the shops or a house they are not familiar with.

Blowing your top and screaming at your child will inflame the situation and may cause your child’s tantrum to get worse! So take a deep breath and speak slowly and calmly, rather than shouting. Try to reason with your child rather than throwing your weight around, you are much bigger and they may feel intimidated.

Conversely, if you respond by being overly concerned by it, they may in the future use tantrums as a way of gaining your attention as they are going to be assured of a response or reaction from you.

It is far easier to stop the tantrum before it escalates too much then to stop a full blown one. If your child is a toddler then try to distract them and take their focus away for their source of anger.

Stick to your guns. If they are having a tantrum because you would not let them do something, the worst thing to do is to give in and then let them have it, just so that the tantrum stops. This will teach them that you will give them what they want if they misbehave.

For preschool children, taking time out or getting them to sit in the corner of a quiet room or bottom step of the stairs can be an effective way to resolve the tantrum. Make them sit there for a minute or so, not too long or they will not remember why they have been put there.

If you wish you can make older children sit there for a slightly longer time, perhaps till they have calmed down and worked out what they did wrong. This will not work for toddlers as their memory is not as developed.

Whichever method of stopping the tantrums you use, you must always explain to the child, no matter what their age, why they cannot throw a tantrum and the reasons you have told them off or made them take time out. Once your child learns that their tantrum will not get them anywhere they will soon stop them.

Reasons to Use Hidden Cameras

November 13, 2009 by

Sure, there are probably a lot of good reasons to use hidden cameras. You can think of reasons that happen at home or at work. Maybe even in a parking lot. But the most important reason above all others is the protection they can provide for your family and yourself. A hidden camera can be a big help.

When you do have suspicions that something is not right either at your house or at your work consider the use of a hidden camera that can help you confirm your suspicions. The newer hidden cameras can be activated to record when they hear a sound or detect motion. You can even find ones that permit scheduled recording times. They can be very small and placed in almost any location without being noticed.

If the company you own or run has an office setting you have probably had the experience that sometimes, or maybe often, a lot of office supplies seem to be missing. You hunt all over but cannot find them. Putting a hidden camera in the office supply room will let you confirm what is happening. If you are a store owner you already know that you are probably losing more money from the register because of employee theft then you are from shoplifting customers. With a hidden camera placed to view the cash register you can find out which employees are lining their pockets at YOUR expense!

Whether we like to admit it or not, when we leave our kids at home by themselves all heck could break loose. Did you tell them not to go near your computer but when you came home you can tell ONE of them had used it? Which one was it? Do you punish them all? Do you do nothing at all? By putting a hidden camera in a position to see the area your computer is located you can find out for sure which one, or ones, have been fooling around on your computer. You only have to catch one of them and the others will usually fall in line and behave when you are not there.

There is nothing worse then coming out to your car in the morning and find that someone has slashed your tires. Who could have done it? Who has it in for you? You might have many suspicions but that will not help the police make an arrest. By placing a hidden camera in such a way that the area your car is in can be recorded when motion is detected or sound is detected, you can get solid proof who was responsible for the damage. Take the video to your local police and they can make an arrest and stop the person responsible.

At home, a hidden camera can help protect your children from their bad, and sometimes unsafe, behavior. It can help store owners increase their profits by decreasing their loss from employee theft. They are an excellent tool for the police because they provide rock solid evidence when they capture somebody recorded committing a crime. It is a good idea to buy a hidden camera and protect yourself and your family.

No More Tears – How To Sleep All Through The Night

November 11, 2009 by

Many families with small children are tormented by sleepless nights, nights where both parents and child doesn’t get enough sleep or sleeps very poorly. Having good sleeping routines and a safe place to sleep is very important for the child, and if this is the case sleeping quality and quantity will improve immensely.

Sleep is important for everyone – adults and children alike. If you are unable to sleep, or if you are woken many times when you want to sleep, it may destroy both night and day for you. For sleep is invigorating for the soul and body.

During sleep a lot happens in both the brain and the body. You can compare some of what happens in the brain, with how to keep tidy in a computer. For example, the files are placed in the right places, the hard disk is cleansed of noise (fragments of files), and that things are placed appropriately. Dreams can be compared with a kind of cleanup program where the consciousness is purified, old scraps are thrown out, and topics are put together in new and constructive ways.

Rest and sleep lets the body to regenerate muscles, cells and tissue. When we sleep the body produces and releases various substances in much greater quantity than when we are awake. This includes for instance growth hormones and hormones that regulate the milk production in lactating women.

If you, night after night, are awakened every time you have just fallen asleep, most people, as the nights go, becomes depressed, psychotic or have other psychiatric disorders. It is scary to think that this is used as a torture instrument. But it also tells us, that the parents must prioritize to get their sleep back, both for sake of the child, but also for the adults.

There are so many arguments to prioritize the good sleep in any family. But to fall asleep and sleep is not necessarily something that happens all by itself for all children. An important foundation for sleep is a good place to sleep.

Falling asleep

The child sleeps much dream sleep, called REM sleep. The type of sleep is shallow, and the baby is breathing irregularly, the eyes have quick, small movements behind closed eyelids (Rapid Eye Movements), and many babies wake up easily when they are in this stage. Most also easily falls back asleep. So wait a little, and don’t do anything until you have seen, if the child falls asleep again. Perhaps a slight humming is enough, or a gentle touch on the forehead or over the muzzle. For many children, the first superficial sleep well last 20 minutes to hour.

When a child is tired, it must be allowed to sleep. The child sleeps better if it has a clean diaper, is full and the temperature is pleasant. If it can be avoided, don’t accustom your baby to sleep with a breast or a pacifier in his or hers mouth. It is also unwise to accustom the child to hold the father’s or mother’s hand when it is about to sleep. Then the pacifier, the breast or the hands will be the signal to that now is the time to sleep for the child. Crying can also work the same way if the child gets used to cry before sleeping. The trick is to make the child falls asleep without any specific stimuli.

It is not good for any children for them to cry themselves to sleep. A child that cries must be comforted. If something is wrong, you must help the child. Food, clean diaper, less light or less noise or more security. Is the child sick, then you must consider what is wrong. Is it hot (signs of fever)? Is it cold? Is it a stomach ache? Is this constipation? Consider wether a health visitor or doctor should be contacted and asked for advice.

Interview Tips to Help You Find Baby Sitter Applicants

November 10, 2009 by

You can find baby sitter applicants in a lot of places. A simple ad posted on a community board can attract potential sitters from all walks of life. The real trouble is in finding the baby sitter who is just right for your family. One way to discover a good sitter is to conduct a comprehensive interview with applicants. Here are some tips to help you conduct a good interview.

Make Her Comfortable

You may think it is only an interview. However, even if you are interviewing applicants, you need to be more than just a potential employer. Conduct your interviews in a nice part of your home that is neither too cozy nor too cold. Make sure she has a comfortable chair to sit on and there is nothing potentially irritating like sunlight, insects or noisy children. Taking the effort to make her feel at home is not just a form of courtesy. It is also an effective way of breaking down her guard. It is in these unguarded moments that you get to know more about people and their backgrounds.

Break the Ice

Keep the applicants at ease. One way is to start asking questions that are not threatening. Begin the interview by asking an applicant to tell you a little bit about herself. Ask her where she is from and if she has any younger siblings.

You can also ask her a little bit about her education and goals in life. These questions will get your applicant talking and will provide the starting point for more serious questions. You do have to keep in mind though that there are lines that should be drawn. Do not be too invasive about private matters.

Ask the Obvious

It is likely for you to find baby sitter applicants with resumes. Even so, you do have to ask questions about what is already obviously outlined in resumes. Ask her to expound about her previous baby sitting experiences. She may be able to reveal more about why she likes to baby sit and if she has learned anything from past experiences. This will help you find out if the applicant has interests that go beyond monetary rewards.

Ask Situational Questions

Most parents prefer to hire sitters who can react quickly to situations. In other words parents prefer applicants who know exactly what to do in any given situation. You can test how well an applicant can handle potential situations by asking her what she would do when these situations come up. You could ask her questions which you think are likely to happen especially with your child. If your child has an allergy for example, you can ask the applicant what she would do if your child suddenly had an allergy attack.

Be Observant

There are more ways than one to find out about a person. One other way is to observe non-verbal language. This is especially helpful if you want to find out if your applicant is telling the truth. Watch for signs of nervousness or uneasiness when you ask questions about her background and past experiences.

By now, you must know that it is not always easy to find baby sitter applicants who are actually good. Your search could take a lot of time but the task is not impossible if you know where and how to start.

Potty Training Boys – 3 Reasons You Should Start Potty Training A Boy Sitting Down

November 9, 2009 by

Potty training boys can be a lot harder than potty training girls; this is usually because boys have more steps to learn. This article will discuss 3 reasons you should start potty training a boy sitting down.

1. Lessen The Confusion:

It really doesn’t matter whether or not they learn how to urinate standing up or sitting down, but either way they will still have to learn how to go to the bathroom sitting down so they can have a bowel movement. Because of this fact it is often recommended that boys learn how to do both sitting down first, this will lessen the confusion as they do not have to learn two different skills simultaneously.

2. Fewer Messes:

After they have mastered urinating standing up, it is likely you will have more messes to clean up as they perfect their aim. This is a natural part of the process and may make things a little more difficult for you if it is done in combination with simply learning to use the potty. If you potty train a boy sitting down first, there will be fewer messes to deal with which will make things go smoother for both of you.

3. Quicker Results:

When you tackle one step at a time, you will most likely see faster results for the whole process. After having successfully learned to use the potty, mastering the skill of standing to pee should be a piece of cake. Messes for this next process are inevitable, but they won’t be in combination with normal accidents that occur for the normal potty training experience.

In this article we looked at 3 reasons to start potty training a boy sitting down. Boys have more to learn than girls do, because of this sitting down during the process is less confusing for them. The benefits are fewer messes in the beginning and faster results since tackling one step at a time is much easier on both of you.

Potty training toddlers is really hard; weeks of accidents and frustration are usually inevitable. But the end result is worth it; hopefully the above steps will help you get through the diaper to underwear transition.

Potty train your boy sitting down or standing up? That is the question…

Infant Colic – How To Identify Its Signs

November 8, 2009 by

Colic is a common condition in many newborn babies wherein the babies cry for long periods of time (3-5 hours without stopping, more than 3 times a week for over a month). While it can be frustrating for parents of newborns to deal with this type of behavior, it is equally exhausting for the baby itself.

First and foremost parents and caregivers of newborn babies that cry need to distinguish the reasons for the baby crying and establishing whether it is crying due to colic pain, which can be simple or severe.

Secondly, they need to understand that colic is common and is not a disorder – although there is no absolute cure for colic, there are various techniques that have proven effective in calming crying infants and giving parents of newborns the rest they need.

An infant may cry due to hunger, sleeplessness or clothes being too tight even; first, find out why the child is crying.

• Check for signs of irritability and redness to the cheeks due to excessive crying for more than 3 hours daily with the legs folding up to the abdomen, since colic is stomach pain and discomfort essentially and these are common signs of colic episodes.
• Difficulty passing stools.
• Some babies with severe colic may thrash about as muscles spasms occur or there may be a distention in the intestines.
• If occurring within 2-3 weeks of the child’s birth, the severe abdominal pain accompanied by excessive crying is known as colic; it occurs recurrently in spasms and stomach pain is frequent with the baby becoming hypertonic and showing alternating body postures. Theses may involve contractions, sudden stretching of limbs or even stiffening in a spastic posture while turning red due to the crying and parents need to be alert about these signs of colic.
• At times, signs that are indications of colic, if persistent, may be symptoms of a more serious digestive tract problem, so observant parents can convey these signs to the doctor for expert advice if all home remedies fail.

Scientific research has given us many possible theories as to why colic occurs: from an immature digestive system that an infant has that is not used to processing food outside mother’s womb to environmental factors like lactose intolerance to powder or cow’s milk or nursing mother consuming allergen/chemical containing food products not suited to baby’s sensitive digestive tract to even insufficient burping or gas build-up due to eating cruciferous foods or caffeine products by mother.

However, it is certain that colic is uncomfortable for both child and caregivers and therefore adequate steps to rule out these sources of colic in the infants to bring down the statistics of 1 in every 10 infants suffering it; burp babies sufficiently during and after meals, rock or walk with the baby to soothe it, play soothing music to calm the baby or give it a pacifier. Even a warm castor oil massage on the tummy or rubbing the baby’s tummy and back to stimulate bowel movement and reduce bloating will give comfort to the colicky baby. This is because all these steps help baby to pass gas and stool, which is the best way to give relief from stomach pain due to colic.

Your Colicky Baby – How To Deal With Colic In Infants

November 6, 2009 by

Firstly, parents need to be aware that colic is not a disorder and now comes the bad news – there is no treatment for it; you have to simply let nature take its course when dealing with a colicky child as the condition usually fades away after the 4th month of a baby crying this way or at the most, 8 months. Very few colicky infants cry till they are a year old and it can be due to other reasons.

To deal with colic, you must first rule out any other reasons for the baby crying, such as hunger, thirst, tight clothing or being hurt somewhere and look for symptoms of colic as given above. Many babies simply yell their lungs out due to the discomfort of colic in the stomach but others with a severe case of colic may trash about and fidget a lot, which can make parents anxious. However, the important thing for new parents with a colicky infant to do is stay calm so they can identify the signs of colic and then work to calm down the child too.

Doctors are divided in their opinion as to the reason behind colic occurring: some say it is due to an immature digestive tract and muscles that an infant has which is not accustomed to processing food and so causes it pain and severe discomfort, others feel it is due to indiscriminate food intake of allergen-triggering or gas-producing food such as cruciferous veggies by a lactating mother that transfers the bloating and subsequent stomach upset tendency to the infant. Still other medical experts attribute colic to lactose intolerance or intolerance to cow’s milk or powder milk, which many bottle-fed babies are raised on that causes colic.

Many a time, colic episodes may occur right after meals and are typical for big, active babies who are hearty eaters; it is easy to spot the symptoms in such infants as they occur at a specific time of day, usually evening.

Colic can be aggravated due to over-feeding and frequent feeding of food stuff that babies may not find easily digestible due to their immature digestive tract and sensitive stomachs; before attending to a crying child with more food, parents must establish whether it is a colic attack. Also, parents with the help of a medical expert need to determine if the baby is allergic to certain kinds of food and then remove these from the infant’s diet as well as any milk feeds the baby may be receiving.

Gas producing foods such as coffee, cabbage, beans, onions, broccoli and certain juices that may trigger off colic episodes should be avoided by lactating mothers so the infant does not suffer colic episodes or juices may be diluted with water to reduce their effect.

Anxiety felt by new mothers can transfer itself to the infant and post-partum depression, experienced by many new mothers has been attributed to causing colic too; therefore, parents should work to avoid letting the baby feel any tension and ensure a calm atmosphere around the house.

Passing of bowels that releases gas in the stomach, holding the infant upright, walking with the baby and playing soothing music are sure ways to reduce the colic episode and calm the baby – try them!

Baby Colic – How To Comfort An Infant In Pain

November 5, 2009 by

When a child is born the colon can begin to react to certain enzymes in the system and cause a lot of pain to the infant. Now this reaction can start within a matter of hours or even days and last until the baby is about 8 months old.

Baby colic is a painful condition and parents are helpless when it does attack. During a colic attack an infant will cry incessantly and even scream at times with the pain. Doctors are not certain what causes colic pains and are unsure of how to treat it. Thankfully the colic attacks are not long lasting and too frequent.

Medical experts have studied the condition and are able to pinpoint the causes of the pain. They are of the opinion that bottle fed infants are more prone to colic pains than breast fed babies are. This is, however, not a rule of thumb as breast fed babies have also been known to develop colic pains.

Baby colic can appear without a warning causing the baby to cry out in pain and then it will just disappear almost as soon as it appeared. The best treatment for baby colic is believed to be gripe water. Mothers can also hold the baby upright to her body to relieve the infant from the pain to an extent. It is believed that the soothing warmth from the mother’s body soothes the infant’s abdomen where the pain is concentrated.

A warm application around the tummy of the baby is also known to help a great deal. Sometimes the colic pains last a very long time and parents have to take it in turn to hold the baby upright and rock it to soothe the pain. Colic seems to attack at a set time when it does. Though the timings will differ from infant to infant, usually the colic attack comes around early evening or late at night.

It is important to establish that the infant’s crying is due to colic pains. The reason for this is that there is no apparent treatment for colic and so it must be allowed to run its course. Though there are ways to comfort the infant and reduce the pain. However, the crying must not be mistaken for colic and ignored, there may be another serious underlying condition that may need immediate medical attention.

Colic pains are usually diagnosed by the baby’s behavior. If a baby crouches and cringes with the pain and cries more than three times a week at almost set times every time then the discomfort is definitely caused by colic pains. A teaspoon full of gripe water at least four or five times a day has been known to effectively comfort the infant.

The Breast Feeding Quandry

November 4, 2009 by

Today’s modern woman is not the same as the woman of the fifties, forties and prior. Today’s woman, thanks to the feminist movement and a broadening ideal of what a woman’s role is in society, has brought women into the workforce in a big way.

Not only that, many women now hold high power positions, and women are a staple at any company, regardless what type of work it is.

This is a stark contrast to women before the feminist movement, before suffrage, and before we were liberated from the restraints of the philosophy that women were the caretakers, the child bearers and the housewives.

Well, while this phenomenon is obviously a great thing, it also has placed additional pressures on women. Why? Because women have multiple responsibilities not only on the job now, but also at home.

One of the evolving ideas is that all women breast feed their children. This is far from what is actually happening today, as women not only are not always able to do this because of a job or other obligations, but also because women have more choices that closely mimic the idea of breast feeding.

There are better formulas, and better bottles, and the idea of bottle feeding is much more readily accepted as “the norm”. However, there are still staunch proponents of breast feeding who insist that breast feeding results in many additional benefits for your infant. Too many to ignore easily, so they say.

The belief and subsequent scientific backing is that breast feeding an infant, even if it is only for a short period of time, results in a stronger immune system and immune response in the baby. And there is a very solid, logical reason for this strengthened immune response that makes sense.

Because the mother’s antibodies are present in her breast milk, the infant instantly gains the advantage of having these preformed antibodies. In essence, breast feeding is thought to give a baby’s immune system a “jump start” and get them ahead of the game from the beginning.

They hence (theoretically) have a more keen ability to fend off illness and disease from the start. Seems like a pretty compelling reason to breast feed, at least for a little while if possible, right? However, the answer is never that cut and dry for new moms.

Many new mothers are physically unable to produce milk, and there are some conditions that make it extremely painful for mothers to breast feed, or that make it impossible to breast feed the infant if the infant has allergies, since anything the mother eats will be transferred through her milk to her baby. Of course there are numerous other factors that enter in, but they are too numerous to mention here!

The strengthened immune system and improved immune response is, of course, a huge argument for breast feeding, but there may be another major argument for breast feeding as well. There have been studies that strongly suggest breast feeding a baby can improve its IQ (Intelligence Quotient).

While the exact reason for this unknown, it is thought that it allows for a more ideal development of the brain, since breast milk contains several nutrients that are not typically “whole” in formulas, and it is in fact, considered a “whole food” or “whole nutrient” in itself.

There also may be a psychological link to a superior IQ development, as infants that breast feed are thought to perhaps form a tighter bond with their mothers, and develop a higher sense of security, which could transfer to a higher IQ.

1.The woman has to show her body that there is a need for milk. In other words, a woman has to stimulate her body. This is first done by pumping the breasts with a breast pump.

2.Next, the woman can wear breast shells about five times a day to help produce Oxytocin. This is one hormone that is needed to produce the flow of breast milk in order to breastfeed. This is a very common approach when looking to breast feed adopted baby.

3.Nest, you can purchase a supplemental nursing system. This is where you hang a milk holder around your neck with two small tubes that connect to your nipple. Important: Breast Feeding Advice

When it comes to breast feeding advice, there is good breast feeding advice and there is some bad feeding advice. A new mother is not going to be able to tell the difference between the good and bad, so this article is here to dispel any bad advice that may be given.

Unfortunately, many people are constantly taking the bad breast feeding advice because it is given by reliable sources. Most of the time it is friends and family and sometimes even nurses. Surely you would think they know what they are talking about. The truth is they may want to give good advice and not know it is wrong.

The first bit of breast feeding advice falls into the category on when your baby is full. Many new mothers are told to watch the clock. To many people, it is all about watching the clock and at a certain time, stop feeding the baby.

Believe it or not, you will know when the baby is done because they will do one of two things. They will either stop nursing or turn away from the breast, or, they will fall asleep. A baby’s body is preprogrammed to tell it when it has enough of something and when it needs more. If you are on a times schedule, you could be denying your baby nutritional values. So, watching the clock is no good breast feeding advice.

Many people also come across the advice to not nurse less than every three hours. This is horrible advice. Although many people’s intentions are good, their advice is not.

A baby should be eating roughly every two hours. This not only keeps the baby full but ensures they are getting the vitamins and nutrients they need. Of course, the baby will go through growing spurts and also those times that they will eat less. It is best to reply on the baby’s body to tell it what the baby needs. The only time feeding should be a concern is when there is a drastic change or the baby is not eating at all.

Another misconception when it comes to breast feeding advice is the notion that you have to prepare your nipples for breastfeeding. This is not the case by any means. The only thing that a mother should be doing is putting Lansinoh cream on their nipples.

This cream should be applied directly on the nipple. This does not have to be rubbed off before breast feeding either. Your breasts and nipples were specifically made for breast feeding. It is natural and there is no other substitution needed. Use a warm wash cloth with water and without soap to clean your breast.

Give your babies cereal in a bottle so they will sleep better through the night is another bad breast feeding advice that is heard. A baby, when breast feeding, will need no other food supply for the first six months of their life. Breast milk is the best thing for a newborn and will supply them with what they need.
