How to Plan your Baby’s Nursery for a Good Night’s Sleep

February 28, 2010 by Lucy Fitzgerald

It’s tempting when first planning your baby’s nursery to concentrate on the adorable bedding, cot bumpers and cute baby stuff available. But if you want your baby to sleep through the night as early as possible, planning the nursery around this will make all the difference in those sleep deprived weeks yet to come.

If you already have a baby and sleep is an issue for you, the tips and suggestions here will be just as useful. Some small adjustments in your baby’s nursery could make a big difference to any sleeping issues you may be facing.

The most important thing your baby nursery needs is a safe place to sleep. Your baby will grow out of her crib or Moses basket quite quickly but it is still useful for helping a newborn become accustomed to sleeping outside of the womb. The Moses basket will help her to feel safe and secure.

When you’re ready to move your baby into the cot, simply place the Moses basket inside the cot for a few nights to familiarize your baby with her new surroundings. You can then start putting her straight into the cot.

It’s important your baby’s cot is safe. Cots with solid boards at the tops and bottom aren’t recommended. A cot with bars all the way around enables air to freely circulate while your baby is sleeping.

Choose a new, firm and clean mattress that fits well. A gap of more than 2.5cm between the side of the mattress and the cot is not safe.

You’ll need a lot less cot bedding than you think. Three or four fitted sheets for the Moses basket and the same again for the cot will be all you need. A baby blanket might be useful in the Moses basket but the safest and easiest option is a good quality sleeping bag.

Choose a fabric like bamboo which has natural anti-bacterial properties. Because of its smooth fibers and the lack of chemical additives (bamboo is bleached without using chlorine), bamboo is a perfect choice when choosing bedding for your baby.

A music player will help you use white noise or lullabies as part of your baby’s bedtime routine. These sounds will encourage your baby to relax and transition from awake to asleep.

Rhythmical sounds and white noise also help a baby to move between sleep cycles without fully waking. When in the womb, your baby was surrounded by sound so absolute silence is very disconcerting for her. Monotonous background noise helps babies to relax and feel safe.

Some babies will sleep anywhere, in any amount of light. Others won’t. Most babies sleep better in the dark simply because their bodies start to produce the sleep hormone that is stimulated by darkness. Your baby will sleep better at night if she gets good quality naps in the day. She is also less likely to wake early in the summer months if the sun isn’t streaming into her bedroom at 5am. So blackout blinds are highly recommended.

Investing in these basic items for your baby’s nursery will be a great starting point for you to begin to establish healthy sleeping habits for your baby.

The Significance Of Watching Your Diet When Pregnant

Maternity can be a wonderful thing although it can also be an incredibly stressful time for many women. Hormonal fluctuations are one thing, the tiredness as well as the change in body shape can be quite distressing for some.

Stretch marks, sagging boobs, and pants that simply fail to go on the way they would once. Most females just find it so tough to keep their self-esteem up when their bodies are under-going such significant changes.

Have you ever wondered how those Hollywood celebrities manage to get pregnant and still look amazing? These guys can make just about anything look sexy, can’t they? What’s their secret?

Before going on, one must always understand that gaining some weight during pregnancy is nature’s way in offering sustenance to your baby. Starting a diet program is not advisable!

Putting on an excessive amount of pounds might cause pregnancy complications as well as jeopardize a baby’s well being. So be mindful of that. Research have shown that women who put on a lot of weight during pregnancy usually end up working ten times harder than other women who maintained their weight all the way till child birth.

Say you decided to monitor your weight in the early stages, you’ll have a less difficult time afterward in getting your old body back.

If you’re in this situation it is advised that you start keeping track of your weight and eat healthy foods at reasonable quantities that are good for both you and your baby.

This is not a very hard thing to do, but you will need to have the will power to fight those cravings (which will come and go) and avoid eating junk food that is only going to make your weight maintenance goals even harder to reach.

Despite what you might have heard or read in magazines, getting some exercise will do you and your baby a world of good as well. You shouldn’t be doing any excessive activity or going for kick-boxing aerobics clearly, just stick to the light exercise like walking on a treadmill for instance.

Looking beautiful during as well as after maternity seriously isn’t impossible. If others have achieved it, then so can you. All that’s required is to stay focused and start your routine with little baby steps, and very soon you will develop a healthy lifestyle that requires very little effort from you to maintain.

The Search for the Right Babysitter Agency: Four Points to Keep in Mind

February 25, 2010 by Rashel Dan

One alternative to finding and interviewing a babysitter yourself is to go with the convenience of working through an agency. One call to the right agency, and you’ve saved yourself a significant amount of time and effort. The question is, how does one find the right babysitter agency?

Here are some points to keep in mind when searching for a babysitter agency.

Reputation/Accreditation

Ask around. Your relatives, friends and colleagues may know of babysitter agencies they can recommend, that would match your specific needs. Having the advice of trusted friends can help put our minds at ease, especially when it comes to our children.

Going through directories of babysitting agency is another option for parents. Parents can then study the credibility of each agency they are considering. Do they have the proper licenses? If there are parent forums, do they have good feedback on the agencies you are considering? How long has the agency been in existence?

Hiring and Selection Process

After narrowing down your babysitting agency search, you can then begin calling potential agencies, and start familiarizing yourself with standard operating procedures for hiring. How are babysitters hired and selected? What work experience is required of them? What training or education do they have, that may contribute to babysitting? Which organizations are they recognized by or affiliated with? How long have they been working as babysitters? Do they know CPR and other basic emergency procedures?

Fees and Services

Inquire about the cost. Find out about all possible costs you may encounter such membership and processing fees, placement fees, and the babysitters transportation fees, for example. Find out what services are covered by the fees you will be paying.

It is while learning about fees and services that you can compare one agency to another. You may have an expectation that all babysitting agencies provide the same services. This is not so. There is a range of standards with which babysitting agencies conduct their business. You may want to choose agencies that provide extraordinary customer care. From your first encounter with them, you can get an idea about the kind of service to expect from your babysitter agency. Are your concerns dealt with in a timely manner? Do they give clear and straight answers to your questions?

Overall Satisfaction

When step one is complete, finding the right babysitter agency, the real game begins. Observe how your new babysitter interacts with your child/children. See how they are at the beginning and end of each session. Are they punctual, courteous, and friendly?

If there will be more than one session with the babysitter, see how your children and their sitter interact from one session to the next.

If in the long run you are happy with the babysitter, your children are happy, and you know you have the right sitter, you have found the right babysitter agency.

It’s easy to find a baby sitter that fits your children’s needs if you know where to start looking. Log on to the best-reviewed baby sitting agencies online and learn how to find a babysitter for your kids.

Taking Care of Baby’s Skin

February 23, 2010 by Annie Stewart

There’s nothing quite like the soft, delicate skin of a baby. And nothing like a cranky infant irritated by diaper rash, cradle cap, or another skin condition. While your baby is perfect, your baby’s skin may not be. Many babies are prone to skin irritation in the first few months after birth.

A baby’s skin is a lot different than adult skin and to the extreme that it needs some different care. Infant skin is formed before they are born so it is in the dark and it is in liquid until the baby is born. The baby’s skin needs to adjust to the world. As people get older their skin also gets older and thickens, so therefore a baby’s skin is finer than paper and has a smooth texture. A baby’s skin has a lot of challenges to keep it’s moisture and to protect itself from the harsh environment.

It is very important to maintain the baby’s pH of the skin between 4-6. By doing this it ensures that the mantel of acid is supported. It is best to never use products that have animal products or any that have by-products. It is also a good idea to not use any fragrance because this can irritate the baby’s skin. It is best to make sure that the product that you are considering is tested by a pediatrician and a dermatologist also. There are some products that are out there that try to go over this recommendation by saying that they are hypoallergenic and recommended.

Anything that has vitamin A and E, Oat extract, Shea butter is great for baby’s skin. When you clean your baby make sure that you use a very mild soap.Sodium Laural Sulfate clogs pores so avoid it at all costs. However you choose to take care of baby’s skin, enjoy bath time and the great time after.

Foods To Eat To Have A Baby Girl

February 22, 2010 by Jerri Babs

You may be surprised to know that by eating the right foods you can influence the gender of your next baby.

The fact is the foods you eat can alter your body’s ph, and a woman who is trying to conceive a little girl can help tip the odds in favor of doing just that by lowering her bodily ph (specifically her vaginal ph at the time of conception) becoming more acidic.

You need to realize that it’s the man’s sperm that ultimately determines the gender of your baby. While the woman’s egg always carries the (xx) chromosome (all girl) the man’s sperm can carry the (xy) chromosome (produces a girl) or the (yy) chromosome (produces a boy.)

Although not very scientific, I will refer to these different sperm as the girl sperm and the boy sperm (for the sake of simplicity.)

The two sperm tend to differ physically, in that the girl sperm is the larger, hardier (lives longer) and a much slower swimmer of the two (takes longer to reach the egg.) Conversely the boy sperm is smaller, weaker (tends to die off quicker) but much faster to reach the egg.

Because of these differences, if you desire a baby girl you should try to lower your vaginal ph which will make survival very difficult for the weaker boy sperm. You can do this by eating foods that are acidic, and rich in calcium, and magnesium, while avoiding foods that are alkaline or high in potassium.

If you want to conceive a baby girl try to eat highly acidic foods such as corn, red meat, fish, and whole grains. Also add foods rich in calcium such as milk, yogurt, cheese, or other dairy products, and foods rich in magnesium like beans, legumes, and green leafy vegetables.

What foods to avoid if you want a baby girl? Any foods high in potassium like watermelon, spinach, potatoes, orange juice (believe it or not) most vegetables, and bananas. Also alcohol, and caffeine are to be avoided as well.

A quicker way to change your body’s ph (diet alone can take a few months, depending on your natural ph) is douching. Douching has been known to cause vaginal infections so if you want to try it please do so under your doctors care!

You can test your vaginal ph with test strips available online or at your local health food store. While trying to adjust your ph you should test often to give yourself the best chance of success. When you’re holding you beautiful little baby girl in your arms, you’ll know all your hard work was worth it!

If you are truly serious about having that little baby girl you want, you will need a guide to walk you through the entire process step by step. You can find these guides at my website, as well as other valuable insights in gender selection.

I truly hope you are successful in your gender selection efforts, but remember even if you fail you will still have a beautiful baby boy to love and nurture!

Problem Getting Pregnant?

If you are having a problem getting pregnant, then having the full picture of what it takes to attain fertilization is really important.

At the time of ovulation, the fallopian tube will pick up the new egg after it bursts out of the ovarian wall. Within seconds, the fimbria (the end of the fallopian tube) will snatch the egg up and draw it inside the tube. If an egg remains unfertilized it can live for up to twenty four hours, and after dying it will be absorbed by the body or it will disintegrate and come out with the menses.

If there is success and fertilization occurs this will actually take place in the fallopian tube. Contrary to popular belief, fertilization does not take place in the uterus. The whole journey of the sperm to the egg in the fallopian tubes can take a good number of hours. The egg gets to the uterus after fertilization by the help of little vibrating cilia, kind of like tiny hairs which line the inside of the fallopian tubes. After a journey of around a week, the egg will reach the uterine lining, where it will finally begin the task of burying itself in the nutrient-rich lining.

If you are having a problem getting pregnant, it is important to remember that conception requires three things to take place: the sperm, the egg and most importantly a conduit for the egg and sperm to travel safely in the hostile vaginal environment.

The aforementioned medium is the cervical mucus that resembles eggwhites, which is a special fertile-fluid. It is this cervical fluid which will allows the sperm to travel to the cervix in safety and unite with the waiting egg. This amazing fertile mucus is produced with rising levels of estrogen in the first part of the cycle, and is at its best at the time of ovulation. This fertile fluid allows sperm to survive inside for as long as five days – so its completely possible that a naughty night out on Saturday can get you pregnant at your office desk on Wednesday!

As it would be a total disaster for a pregnant body if the lining of the uterus were to disintegrate as it usually does in normal cycles, the body does an amazing trick and stops this from happening. The body will start to produce a hormone called Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) when a fertilised egg burrows into the uterus, which stops the lining from being discarded. This hormone sends a message directly to the corpus luteum (fancy for the lining of the uterus) and tells it to keep on kicking for a while longer. The corpus luteum will continue to maintain itself for a couple of months till the placenta is ready to take over and the placenta will then maintain the lining as well as provide oxygen and nourishment to the growing foetus.

False-negative pregnancy tests are usually received if the test has been done too soon, because the whole process can take a while, and the test is measuring HCG, so if it hasn’t been produced yet, the test will come back negative even if an egg is fertilised. When women chart their cycles, they are more likely to know when a pregnancy has occurred from the first point of implantation because of the notable changes in the cycle.

When couples are having a problem getting pregnant it really is vital that they fully understand the process involved in getting pregnant, because unlike what our mums tell us as youths, for some getting pregnant is not that easy.

No matter how prepared you think you are for pregnancy, chances are that your symptoms might take you by surprise. Unexpected bodily functions such as uncontrollable vomiting are likely to embarrass you at the most inopportune times. Women have been experiencing these morning sickness symptoms since time began, and many have found and documented remedies for morning sickness. In this article we will discuss a few common ways to relieve morning sickness and gradually stop morning sickness from occurring so often.

Home remedies for treating morning sickness can be highly effective. However, some may have little or no effect if you have severe morning sickness. As with any treatment, you should discuss options with your doctor before trying them, to ensure that you keep yourself and your baby safe.

Morning sickness is one of the most dreaded symptoms of pregnancy. The most common doctor-recommended suggestions include taking pre-natal vitamins at night, taking them with meals, and reducing iron consumption. Other remedies for morning sickness include acupressure treatments, taking vitamin B6 supplements and ginger. If certain odors cause nausea, they should be avoided. Paying attention to foods that cause nausea and avoiding them can also be helpful. Often, increasing protein and water consumption while decreasing the amount of sweets and fats you eat can work miracles. Decreasing meal sizes and eating more often has also been observed to help.

For some women, none of the home treatments for morning sickness will alleviate severe morning sickness. There are some natural herbal supplements that have been proven effective, the best of which is Mommy’s Bliss Morning Sickness Magic–a light and soothing formula that is tasteless and can relieve most of the problems associated with morning sickness. This supplement also contains important nutrients for both the mother and the developing baby.

Assuming you have the approval of your doctor, many of the remedies for morning sickness mentioned in this article may help save you discomfort and embarrassment. An open-minded approach to the list and a willingness to experiment will go a long way in helping you find the solutions that work best for you.

Baby Allergies – 3 Common Symptoms That Can Be Caused by Food

This article will discuss 3 symptoms of baby allergies that could be caused by food. If you or your baby suffers from any of the symptoms below, you could be suffering from a hidden food allergy and not even know it.

1. Eczema: When your skin is dry and itchy you don’t usually associate this symptom with an allergy to food. But it is very common for this skin problem to be caused by having a hidden food allergy to a certain food, like wheat or even dairy.

Doing a little research to see which foods are common for causing issues like eczema and then strategically eliminating and reintroducing them, it is possible to cure eczema by removing them from your diet indefinitely.

2. Asthma: Asthma, just as with eczema, can be caused by eating a food that you have an allergy to. Sometimes it can be hard to figure out which foods are causing the problem, but you can do testing or food elimination diets to find out and then remove them to see if your symptoms improve.

By removing the food that is a problem for you it might even be possible to stop taking allergy medication or using an inhaler. Be sure to consult a physician before doing so.

3. Sinusitis: Having a stuffy nose is not normally linked to having a problem with a food like dairy. Allergens outside of the body are usually blamed for causing this problem, but even so, sinusitis can be caused by having a hidden food allergy. If that certain food is removed from your diet, the stuffy nose will clear up and usually fairly quickly within a few days or weeks of eliminating that food.

This article discussed baby allergies and 3 symptoms that can be caused by food. Eczema, asthma and even sinusitis all can be connected to having a sensitivity to a particular food. Even headaches can be linked to a problem with wheat, dairy or other foods. Tips for Choosing a Video Baby Monitor

Having a video baby monitor can help a new parent ease their mind by being able to keep an eye on their child from another room. Whether your baby is napping or falls asleep at bedtime, having a video monitor will help new parents keep up with their usual activities and still be able to actually see their child, not just hear him when he cries.

A video baby monitor is composed of two parts; the transmitter and receiver units. The transmitter unit contains a camera, and is what will be placed in the room where the baby is. Keeping it in the vicinity of where the baby is will guarantee that the parents will be able to see and hear the baby cry or wake. The receiver unit is carried by the parent to every area of the house he or she goes to ensure that they are alerted by any of the noises made by their baby. With most receiver units, parents carry them clipped to their belt loop or on a lanyard.

The most popular choice in these monitors is the wireless unit. However, choosing a wired baby monitor is a great solution if there will be interference from other wireless devices in your home. The only downside is that the wired baby monitor needs to be installed. It will require someone who likes DIY projects, or else a contractor may need to be hired to install it. If you end up choosing a wired baby monitor, you will be more restricted to where you can locate the transmitter unit. Unfortunately, you cannot move it around freely like the wireless baby monitor unit.

When you install your video baby monitor, you should take into consideration the best height for the camera, so that you can see your infant from every angle, and get the best sound quality from the camera speakers as well as the hand held monitors.

Choosing the right baby monitor that works for your needs is important. Find out all the features of the baby monitor you’re interested in before making your final decision. Also find out the store policy in regards to the monitor being returned in case it’s not working well in your home.

Physically watching your baby around the clock is almost an impossibility. Fortunately, baby monitors have come along to help to fill the gap.

Testing For Paternity – How Does It Work

February 11, 2010 by Benedict Perez

Testing for paternity can be a very tough decision to make as the results can have a very deep affect upon the life of every father, mother and child. The whole issue not only has legal aspects to it but can also be quite emotional.

How does the test work? DNA is found in every cell and it helps in determining the actual father of the child as every DNA structure is unique in every human body. A child will carry the DNA sequence of each parent and this will help in evaluating the identity of the father. If the child has a similar DNA structure as his presumed father then with 99.9% certainty the fatherhood can be determined.

The child inherits DNA formation from both the parents, half from the father and other half from the mother. Testing for paternity can be stressful for the father, mother and the child hence the subject should be seriously thought through before making any decision.

When is it normally done? It can be done after or before the birth of the child. Though the processes of analysis are the same, the way of collecting the DNA differs. The sample is taken from the fetus. There is a small amount of risk involved for the baby. After the baby is born the DNA sample is taken by swabbing the cheek cells of the baby. The sample from the alleged father and the mother is taken in order to determe the results.

If you want to do the testing for paternity for your own satisfaction then you can buy a home testing kit. If you want to use the test results for legal purposes such as changing the name on the birth certificate or for filing child support then you have to go to a registered, authorized doctor to have the testing done.

Paternity testing can have a lot of implications and can even have adverse effects on your relationship. Before you take any action make sure to analyze the consequences. You can find the home DNA testing kit online and can order it immediately. Normally it takes a week’s time to get the results.

As a father if you have any questions you may want to submit yourself to testing for paternity. You may want to try legal paternity testing.
