Why Are So Many Children Losing Their Hearing?

May 31, 2010 by

There are an increasing number of cases being reported by doctors of young children losing their hearing. Many of these patients are predicted to have the hearing capacity of a 60 year old by the age of 30. However this epidemic is not down to diseases or a virus but the rising exposure to high volumes of noise.

The rise in popularity of MP3s and personal entertainment devices is causing many children to listen to music in earphones without observing the noise guidelines, this kind of concentrated noise damages the ears, often beyond repair. Many children are often exposed to loud noises against their will, for example being taken to a music or sporting event by their parents, although their parents may have no idea that it poses a risk. Dr Martin, Professor of preventive medicine at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland said, “If a sound reaches 85 decibels and over an extended period, it can permanently damage hearing. The safe level for an iPod is 80 per cent on the volume slider. If you listen to music at that level, you can safely listen for 90 minutes a day.”

If you consider that a normal conversation would occur at 60 decibels of sound, a level that is completely harmless to the ears, when exposed to a loud concert or busy motorway, often at around 120dB, this can be very irritating. Prolonged exposure to these levels can cause serious damage. Exposure to noises above 150dB such as a jet engine or pneumatic drill can cause instant irreparable damage. Even noises at a constant low level can cause high blood pressure, stress, anxiety and insomnia.

There is a simple way of determining the whether your headphone volume is too loud, stand at arms length from someone with the music on and, if you cannot hear them talk, the volume is too loud. High volumes can physically damage your ears but in many cases will manifest in an affliction called Tinnitus. Tinnitus is a terrible condition that causes a permanent loud ringing noise in the ear and can often take over a person’s life. Although some cases are treatable, it usually remains present and victims are forced to suffer an unbearable ringing noise in their ear for the rest of their life.

In developed countries, 12% of children aged 12 to 19 have hearing loss to some extent that is caused entirely by exposure to loud noise. Although there are laws regarding noise levels in a workplace, there are no laws about personal exposure.

Treating the rising number of cases of hearing loss is requiring hospitals to create more jobs for nurses.

Tips In Handling Toddler Temperament

May 29, 2010 by

Perhaps the most challenging part of being a parent starts the moment your baby becomes a toddler. As a parent, you have no choice but to accept the changes and start looking for ways to effectively handle the mood of your new toddler. If you do not come prepared for this stage, you will do things the wrong way which can lead to a lot of other bad things for you and your child. Handling toddler temperaments may be a bit easier for experienced parents, given that your youngest child act and think like your older children. But most likely than not, every toddler has a completely different temperament from those who were born ahead of him.

In order to handle your child’s moods effectively, you should first know your toddler’s temperament. This could mean having an excuse in handling your child’s moods the first few times in order to observe how and what it is like. While still in the process of observing your child’s own behavior, it will be helpful to read about child temperaments and the ways to go about them. You can then base your observations on what you have read, and identify your child’s different moods. As soon as you figure things out, you can then go ahead and apply what you have learned and treat your toddler with sternness and tolerance.

If your toddler hates to undergo sudden changes in what he perceives as routine, then you should make sure that you let him understand such changes before these take place. For example, he may be accustomed to taking a bath after his favorite cartoon show. But then you have to leave the house earlier, so you have to make him understand that he needs to take a bath earlier than usual. Of course, you do not talk to him as if you are talking with an adult. Use your most soothing voice and the simplest words for him. Chances are, he will understand you and will not bother to say no to your request.

Toddlers who are energetic and those who seem to have no sense of control over their voice will usually need gentle reminders to calm them down. They should not be prohibited to do the things that they do unless they start to harm themselves or others. Providing your toddlers enough time to use up his energy should be balanced with allowing him to get enough rest afterwards. The important thing there is that you do not control him or prevent him from playing or doing other physical activities.

Yes your toddler needs discipline, but discipline does not equate to depriving him of playful activities and time to have fun. Just make sure that he knows that there is a limit to everything, and tell him so in the gentlest way possible.

When To Provide The Baby A Bottle

May 27, 2010 by

One of the numerous concerns facing a new mother is whether to feed her new infant from the breast or the bottle. When the tradition of breastfeeding in America was lost throughout the last century, bottle-feeding became the norm. Today quite a few women are choosing to breastfeed, but with busy and demanding lifestyles they typically discover it necessary for their babies to accept a bottle (hopefully filled with breast milk). Occasionally a breastfed baby balks at accepting an artificial nipple for feeding. The following suggestions may aid when offering a bottle to a resisting baby. However, none of these are necessarily an absolute ‘fix’. Encouraging your breastfed baby to accept a bottle can be a process that might need your practice and patience for a number of weeks.

When to Start off

Suggestions for the finest time to start off bottle-feeding a breastfed infant vary in the current investigation from two weeks to six weeks of age. Two very helpful markers are that the mother’s milk supply is properly established and breastfeeding is going nicely. When these criteria are met, we suggest starting at two to four weeks of age since an older baby may perhaps strongly refuse the bottle.

The Method

Occasionally a breastfed baby will take a bottle from the mom. But numerous breasted babies refuse to take a bottle from their mothers given that they instinctually know she provides milk and are confused and upset by the unique, less familiar alternative. It can be very helpful to have an individual other than the mother provide you with a breastfed baby a bottle. Mothers may well wish to step out of the room, or leave the house in the course of the bottle-feeding. Or, at times the exact opposite approach works and also the mom is the very best person to offer you the bottle.

Have the father/caregiver mimic the nursing mother’s feeding ritual and practice respect for that baby’s newly learned breastfeeding cues. Mom may wish to breastfeed for a few minutes before offering the bottle. Then, possess the father or caregiver cuddle the baby as the bottle is given, just as the mother cuddles the baby while nursing.

If the baby resists becoming cuddled, possess the father/caregiver hold the baby with his or her back against their chest with the baby facing out. Looking out into the room provides a distraction, which might be very helpful.

As a last resort, the father/caregiver can try feeding the baby seated in an infant seat, if the baby still resists being cuddled.

Potty Training Your Baby: Using Baby Steps

May 21, 2010 by

Parents are often unsure about how and when to begin baby potty training – and for good reason. It is very essential to start baby potty training at the correct time – and also essential to make sure that you train your baby to use the potty the right way – so that this does not become a trying period for either you or your baby. There are of course many different ways to go about baby potty training that many people will swear by. You must find the baby potty training method that is best suited for you and your baby. Look through various guides after you finish reading this article so that you have an idea about how different people tackle the situation differently. Personal experiences are the best kinds of guides that you will find – many of your questions will be answered because many mothers have been through the very same problems you are facing before.

Potty Training Baby at the Precise Time

One of the most important things that I must stress is do not rush or hurry your child into potty training, this could prolong their process. Keep an eye out for signs that your baby is ready to start the potty training process; this usually is between the age of eighteen months up to two years old; some children may be three or up to four when they are completely trained to use the potty. Your child might start to show their own interest about potty when they see you using the facility. They might ask questions or try and copy you. Some will even volunteer and ask to be potty trained themselves when they are ready. Since your child is probably going to be walking and running on their own and having more control of their body, they may start to have longer “dry spells” where they are not urinating in their diaper or panty pull ups. They might start to tell you that they are “going” in their diaper, a good sign they are ready to start because they are aware what they are doing. This is partly because they are getting to learn how to control their own bladder muscles. You might also start to see a trend on timing, do they have bowel movements the same time of the day or night? If so, it is a good time of the day to sit them down or ask them if they want to use the potty.

You Absolutely Do Not Want to Do This While Potty Training

Do not put pressure on the child to use the potty; this can definitely discourage them rather than encouraging them to give it a try. Using punishment is never a good idea when potty training; rather you must use firmness when talking to the child and letting them know what is expected of them; but do not force or yell at them to “just do it”. It is imperative that the child isn’t afraid of this new experience, or change. The stress and fear could cause your child to experience constipation if you are too tough on them.

Baby Potty Training Techniques That Might Help You Out

Use the potty chairs, put a few throughout the home so that the child has easy access and quick access to them. This way when the fell the urge they are not too far from a potty chair. Praise the child when they make an attempt at the potty chair, using rewards is a great way to help them along the way, but be consistent. But the best thing you can do is keep firm, but gentle and trust yourself and your child and all will come naturally.

There are many reasons for baby potty training from showing your child self control to gaining confidence in a new area mastered in your child’s life: http://www.babypottytraining2day.info .

Early Reading? Can Your Baby Read From Birth?

May 17, 2010 by

Can your baby really read from birth? Newborn babies learn all about the world around them by listening to sounds, sound patterns and spoken language.

This prepares them to learn to talk and to learn the printed words.

You should provide as many opportunities as possible for your babies to love the experience of reading from birth by setting a good example and making reading a positive time.

Tell a story from memory or recite a rhyme when breast-feeding. Your baby will enjoy listening to your voice whilst feeding, and that enjoyment will be associated with enjoying stories.

Don’t think you have to wait until your baby is ready to read stories or rhymes. Your baby is ready from birth. Read to your baby right from day one.

Talk to your baby all the time. Think of them as a good friend and chat away. Repeat all the sounds your baby makes. Encourage your baby to make sounds back and have a ‘sound conversation’ with baby.

Play lots of music to your baby as often as possible. Mozart is particularly good as it has been shown to alter the way baby’s brain works and makes learning easier. But any music is good as it develops your baby’s sense of rhythm which is good for language development.

Your baby will experience reading as rewarding and positive where you and baby bond and get closer if you follow all the tips described here, which can only be a good thing!

How You Can Bring Up Your Kids Properly

May 15, 2010 by

Childhood years are the best times to discover. A person’s comprehension is at its peak throughout childhood. Mothers and fathers should take advantage of these learning years and ingrain the values of life in their children.

If you’re a parent, teach them good habits to ensure that they’ll know and see the beauty that life has to provide. Make them enthusiastic about life. Instill into their hearts and minds all the wonders and magnificence of becoming alive by living life to its fullest in a positive way.

There is a startling distinction between children learning through self-discovery, and children learning via self-discovery with proper guidance. The first things that kids discover are generally the things that remain with them and mold the formative years until they achieve adulthood.

Suppose you let your children learn via self-discovery. To some particular extent, self-discovery is good because it develops complete independence and self-reliance. However, the understanding process might be slow. In a sense, it is like a trial and error encounter for kids. They’ve to segregate the good from the poor, the correct from the wrong, what they like and the things they don’t. It’s most likely that the things they will like are the ones that appear easy to them or the ones that they appreciate probably the most. And the ones that they enjoy the most might not necessarily be the great ones. Without having correct guidance, what they like and enjoy probably the most might really be hurting them although they aren’t aware of it. Possibly later, if they discover that they picked the incorrect choices, it may be too late.

With self-discovery through correct advice, you’ll be able to leave room for them to develop independence and self-reliance. At the same time, explain to them what’s right and what is wrong. Explain to them why. If possible, cite situations or examples based on true-to-life events to make them a lot more convincing and practical. The more realistic they’re, the more easily the children are convinced. Likewise, attempt teaching them in a friendly and humorous atmosphere. Kids are more attentive and eager to discover when all (both teachers and students) are in an easy mood. You will know and really feel their eagerness to discover via the sparkle in their eyes and by the way they answer your questions. You are able to be certain that the things they discover from you is acceptable to them and will remain with them. That’s why, to be a parent, you must demonstrate enthusiasm in life to your kids.

There’s a third method of making kids learn. That’s via correct guidance leaving negligible room for self-discovery. But there are drawbacks. You take away from them the benefits of self-reliance and independence. The guidance you devote to them might be good and well intended, but they must not rely on you on almost everything they do. They turn out to be decision-dependent on you. There are situations wherein this kind of advice might be worse than giving no advice whatsoever.

You will find parents who underwent hardships during their childhood, strive, and became successful financially. Although they are financially in the position to guide and assist their children to some better life, they rather have that their children undergo the exact same hard experience they underwent throughout their younger ages. Their grounds is to ensure their children will value and experience the same things they went through. This might be applicable to stubborn and rebellious youngsters, but not to disciplined ones. Why must their sons and daughters repeat the exact same difficulties? There’s no reason to. This is like punishing the innocent. Rather than repeating the experience, they should learn from it. Life is too short to repeat unsavory experiences.

One of the best ways to broaden your children’s understanding about life is by traveling. The world – its varied people, locations, and cultures – has a great deal of info to offer. It is perhaps as important as the conventional classroom. If you are financially capable, traveling is one from the best educational experiences you can give your kids. Look for exhibits or world fairs, and bring your children there. Books would be the next best things. It is traveling by reading.

Fill your kids with thoughts of self-importance, confidence, and positive attitude so that there is going to be no room for damaging thoughts. More importantly, fill their world with laughter, love, and understanding. You’ll in no way go wrong.

Tips For The Best Baby Skin

May 13, 2010 by

Baby skin care is very important to a baby’s well being, anything that makes them feel uncomfortable contributes to them crying or being unhappy.

One of the best baby skin care tips is to make sure that the baby’s skin is always clean and dry. You will do so by giving the baby regular baths which are right for the age of the baby and make sure that his or her dipper is not wet. Babies tend to get very irritated when their skin is wet and this can lead to skin irritations like a rash. Baby skin care is very basic and ensures that your baby is always comfortable in their skin.

One other important thing is to make sure that your baby’s skin is always moisturized. Even adults need regular moisture for their skin. This prevents the skin from getting dry and making sure that it is always soft. There are a number of baby skin care products that one can use. Some of these are baby oils and even the old time favorite, petroleum jelly. This is a skin care product has been used for many years and is known to prevent nappy rash on babies.

The Things To Use On A Baby’s Skin

Since a baby’s skin is so sensitive, it would be wise to use only baby skin care products or natural baby skin care products for the baby. Some other products are not good for baby’s because they could contain substances that are to harsh for a baby’s skin. The more natural the product is the better it can be for the baby.

One should always avoid products with substances that can cause irritations on the skin when is comes to babies. Their skin needs products that will protect them from skin irritations and it needs to be moisturized.

Using clinically tested baby products for the baby’s skin ensures that there smaller chances of the skin experiencing any irritations. Organic products can be better as those are safer because they are natural. The baby’s well being is always the important factor above all.

Ideas On How To Avoid Sibling Competition

Anybody with more than one child in their family is only too aware of the sibling rivalry. It is a natural part of growing up, and there is always going to be the odd scuffle now and then.

To try to make it a little easier. You could always try what is known as passive parenting.

Everybody knows that the start of most fighting is when one child tells on another child, even for the most trivial thing, just to try to get them into trouble. Why not set a few ground rules? It is okay to tell on somebody if they are hurting you or if they are being destructive in the home or with your things, but if they tell over something more trivial it is them that will get into trouble!

Instead of always sorting out their problems all the time, occasionally just say something along the lines of “wow that must really annoy you” do not always fix the problem but offer a statement instead,

If they keep coming back with the same complaint, then you keep giving them the same answer. This will annoy them at first, but they will soon realize that perhaps they can sort it out for themselves. This may not always work, but should work some of the time.

Your children should be encouraged to set their own rules for what is right and what is wrong.

Bedrooms can be a starting point. Make sure that the siblings must not enter each others bedroom unless they have asked for permission to do so first.

Making sure that siblings can sort out their own problems can make them grow up to be a more confident person, because after all sibling rivalry is always going to be there.

Essential Baby Equipment – What You Need For A Happy Baby & Mother

May 9, 2010 by

Essential Baby Equipment covers a variety of areas when it comes to looking after your baby. In all honesty my idea of essential is completely different to most. I never had a crib or a changing station or a nursing chair. In fact my most expensive purchase was reusable diapers.

However despite my lack of items, I do consider some items to be essential for a baby and many people don’t own these items at all. This is my list:

Clothing – Every baby needs a lot of clothing because they can make a huge mess. I bought my items from ebay, had hand me downs from when my husband was a little boy and also bought organic clothing for my son. My son had acid reflux issues for a good few months when he was first born and this ment I was changing him every five minutes. Having lots of clothing on hand was essential for me, otherwise my son would have been naked or dirty all the time. I find second hand a good option and you get bundles of clothing very cheaply on ebay or even try out charity shops.

Car Seat – This is something that you will need as soon as your baby is born if you have your baby at hospital. You will want to get them home safe and sound.

Baby Sling – I found this absolutely essential. I have used it nearly everyday and when my son was born he was very colicky and he spent most of his time in it. I took him for walks in the sling and around the house that helped him stay calm and feel soothed. I have also found this great for when he is older too but now he is 2 he seems to be in and out of arms so I tend to just carry him instead!

Muslins/Cloths – In relation to my son’s acid reflux, a lot of mop cloths were needed! I was lucky to have lots of spare from buying lots for my son’s diapers. Try to get a good back up stock of mops. Babies are inevitably messy little things and this will save you have to do washing everyday. Cloths are also great for mopping up once your baby is grown so don’t think this is a wasteful expense – it isn’t!

Nursing Pads – Unless you want to have milk all over your tops and have to keep changing your tops, nursing pads are a must. At first I found I needed a continuous supply!

Breast Pump – This is on this list because for me, it was absolutely essential from the get go. I managed to get Mastisis as a result of my breasts being too full and had to go buy a pump to help relieve it. I also found that the pump allowed me to get some milk ready so my husband could feed our son while I got much needed rest (I did this in the first 6 weeks, although it is recommended you don’t use a pump this early as it may cause problems for your baby and their ability to latch).

Nutritionists of today practically universally commend fish oils. Why? There is more and more study coming out regarding the benefits of omega-3 fish oils every day. The body of science that has developed is incredibly robust and well acknowledged from Nutritionist to MD’s. This science involves encouraging findings for Omega-3′s effectiveness on well being concerns ranging from reducing joint inflexibility to reducing the danger of stroke but it is also extremely beneficial for strong people to add Omegas to their daily routine and particularly important for pregnant women and children.

For a large amount of healthy people, omega-3 fish oils play a fundamental role in a large amount body functions. They are especially needed for women who are pregnant or thinking on the subject of having a baby because they make up the membranes of more or less every cell in the body. There are also new scientific studies suggesting a link between a decrease in certain types of food allergies and infant eczema. Now many researchers think that mother’s should be taking Omega-3′s well previous to getting pregnant, as the fetus seems to be getting a lot of the DHA in particular, from the mother’s tissue stores. These essential fatty acids are also crucial for expecting mothers because of their impact in numerous areas of health.

So, if you are already eating well, taking good care of your well being (as well as taking a daily multi vitamin), Omega-3′s are a smart option. You will want to look for products that contain both EPA and DHA with a bare minimum daily dose of 1000mg combined. Also note that EPA and DHA can be found in flax seed and DHA can be found from algal sources for those interested in keeping a vegan diet.

There is one more thing to consider when selecting the proper Omega-3 product for you. The dosage form! Usually fish oil omegas are found in large soft gelatin capsules or a flavored liquid vitamin. Choose a high quality supplement from a reputable source, and keep the product refrigerated to avoid rancidity

Additional dosage forms include anything from gummy vitamins and soft chew candies to fortified foods and milk

Baby Showers And The Delight Of The Pregnant Mother To Be

May 5, 2010 by

Baby showers are considered to be the most appropriate opportunity to honor the expectant mother. In a typical baby shower there will be food, games and activities. The shower often takes place just a few months before the baby is born. To host a successful shower party, you need the cooperation of the mother.

The purpose of a shower party is to honor the expectant mother and her child. This is a chance for family members and relatives to gather and enjoy their gathering. A shower is also a good opportunity for friends and workmates to share the happiness with the parents.

The expectant mother will receive gifts and supplies from guests. These gifts will be used for, and by, the new baby. Before the party, the mother gives a list of what she and her baby need. The guests will then buy gifts based on what the mother needs.

There are parties for couples and there are parties for women only. You must therefore first determine the type of party you want to do.

If your party has only female attendees, you should choose only womanly activities like tea parties and spa showers. The party will be decorated with a main color. This color can be pink or blue depending on which gender the new child is.

There are also showers for men only. These showers tend to have sporting activities. If the parents are having their second child, they have had enough toys and clothes for the baby. Therefore, they may want to celebrate a party where all the guests bring books to build a library for the child.

The baby shower normally takes place a few months before the child is born. However, there are showers that take place after the mother has given birth to the infant. This way of doing has the advantage of allowing the guests to see the baby and buy gifts accordingly.

Invitations should be sent four to six weeks before the occasion. Don’t send invitations too close to the event because there are chances that some guests cannot make it. If you want to invite guests from far away towns, you should notice them even earlier so that they have to time to arrange their job and prepare gifts.

Food and drink plays an important part of the success of a shower party. You should prepare food for all the expected guests and also for a few unexpected ones too – just in case! Baby showers will be a great joy for not only the parents but also any guests attending the event.

Hosting a baby shower can be a lot of work, but it can be rewarding as well. By searching at your local library, in magazines and by visiting our baby showers website, you should be able to find enough activities to keep everyone occupied and happy.

3 Reasons Every Parent Should Own A Baby Carrier Backpack

The baby carrier backpack is changing the way many parents carry out their daily lives while their children are little. It used to be that oversized, heavy strollers and flimsy umbrella strollers were essentials for transporting children and taking them out in public, but these forms of transportation are not always convenient or practical. That is why more parents are now considering a baby carrier backpack as a third essential for parenthood.

Even though this is the main reason parent’s purchase a baby carrier backpack, there are several other things to consider. Today we want to talk about 3 of the most common reasons people purchase baby carrier backpacks.

1. They are safer in a crowd.

Anytime you want to go to a festival, an amusement park, the mall, or even a local sports game, maneuvering through a crowd with a child is difficult. You want to make sure no one runs into him or her, they don’t jump out into the middle of the street, and that no one and we mean NO ONE would have the opportunity to kidnap them. Obviously you don’t want to think about these issues, but they are always in the back of a parent’s mind. You can eliminate a lot of the risk if you own a baby carrier backpack.

When you are carrying your child securely against your back, you don’t have to worry about these things as much. Obviously, your child is safely seated and is not going to run off anywhere and you will definitely notice if someone tries to get them out of the carrier since it is located right on your back.

Children actually feel safer and more secure, especially when they are young and not quite used to maneuvering through crowded locations yet.

2. Look! No Hands!

One of the biggest problems when lugging your children around in a stroller is you can’t use your hands for anything else. If you stop to look at something or answer your cell phone you basically stop walking completely. Then of course when you reach your destination and have to get through some doors it’s an irritating process.

You avoid that hassle when your child is securely seated against your back. Your hands are free at all times and you don’t have to stop to open a door and walk through.

3. They can go anywhere your own body can go.

That’s right. If you have to go to the restroom for a moment, try on a new pair of jeans, or just get to a vending machine upstairs, your child can go anywhere. If you take a stroller you have to contemplate stairways, escalators, and various other places a stroller isn’t meant to go. So instead of being left out while you wait, you can just strap your little one to your back and enjoy every minute you’re out and about with your family.

Literally anywhere you could possibly want to go is now accessible with your child! A good baby backpack carrier will allow you to take your child along without you worry and hassle free. This means the pacing and routines of your daily life are not slowed down and you don’t have to miss out on anything just because you are now a parent!
