How do babies get more breast milk as they grow?
I know about increasing breast milk supply, but what I wonder is how do the babies get more milk as they get older? Do they start drinking longer? Does more milk come out at a time? With nipples on bottles, there are more and/or larger holes – is that how it works with the breast?
I am exclusively breast feeding my 2 month old daughter and am just curious. Thanks!
They’ll suck more efficiently. You’ll probably notice that while nursing, your baby will start to pull off when your let down happens. As they get older, this won’t bother them as much and they’ll be able to handle a faster flow. Bottles have 1 hole, 2 and 3 holes (as rated on the nipple). You breast has MANY more holes than that.
What my wife has found is that our daughter is so efficient now at feeding, she’s faster (gets more milk) at 7 months (5-10 minutes per feed) than she did at 2 months (15-20 minutes).
I my experience, they don’t necessarily nurse for longer, they just get much more efficient at getting the milk they need. I also felt like there was a greater ‘rush’ of milk when the let-down occurred so maybe the milk flows a little faster too…all part of the supply and demand that the breast works under.

You try to question the mother nature. It is a natural phenomenon. Look at a baby elephant and see how it drinks its mother’s milk with its trunk to hinder? Babies know how to get it and the mother also gives as much as they want. It is the modern woman who is stopping it by unnatural means. Leave ti to them they will take what they are entitled to so long as they want.
