How to tell if your baby is colic or just normal crying?
my hubby seems to think that our baby might be colic but i think she just has normal crying spurts at times when she is tired, hungry, etc…. so how do you tell the difference??
when you say cries for 3 hours… does this mean a total of 3 hours all together per day or 3 hours straight at one time?

Colic is a cry of pain. crying After eating, after bathing, after a nap, and your child still isn’t happy then it is colic. Plus you can rub his tummy or put a little pressure to see if she squirms in pain.
My son was this way his first month. He was very fussy.
Colic is “chronic” crying. If your baby is just crying in spurts, that’s perfectly normal. Some babies cry a little, some babies cry a lot, it’s all normal. But if your baby is crying for hours on end, that could be colic.
it is easy to tell cause the Colic cry is definitely different. It is a non stop crying episode, for at least 3 hours, everyday. Baby seems restless, baby retracts his legs and then stretches them like kicking, it’s just horrible, colicky babies are easy to recognize. The cry of a colicky baby will drive you nuts.
ETA: 3 straight hours or more.
Almost all babies go through a fussy period. When crying lasts for longer than about three hours a day and is not caused by a medical problem (such as a hernia or infection), it is called colic. This phenomenon occurs in almost all babies. The only thing that differs is the degree.
If your baby cries about the same time each day and nothing you do seems to offer comfort, your baby may have colic. Colic is often defined as crying more than three hours a day, three days a week for more than three weeks in an otherwise well-fed, healthy baby.
Colic can be distressing for both you and your baby. But take comfort: Colic is relatively short-lived. In a matter of weeks or months, the colic will end, and you’ll have weathered one of the first major challenges of parenthood.
If you have a colicky baby you wouldn’t even have to ask if they are colicky, you know. You want to crawl in a hole to escape the crying because they always cry. There is no doubt about whether they are colicky.
If she only cries when she is tired or hungry or or whatever she is certainly not colicky she is a normal baby.
And despite some books that say colicky babies cry at the same time or mostly in the evenings that is not always true, colicky babies can cry almost all the time they are awake. My son has colic and does not cry for 3 hrs in a row, he cries pretty much all the time he is awake, he is never awake and content. My pediatrician has said he is colicky.
Doctors call a baby colicky when they cannot find a reason for the baby crying excessively. It’s a way of saying “you have a baby that cries all the time but we have no clue why, sorry hopefully they’ll grow out of it someday soon”.
The crying or fussing most frequently begins suddenly, and often after a feeding. The cry is loud and continuous, and the spells last from one to four hours. The baby’s face often gets flushed or red. The belly is sometimes distended or prominent, the legs alternating between flexed and extended straight out; the feet are often cold and the hands clenched. The episodes, while they can occur at any time of the day or night, typically begin in the late afternoon or early evening, just when parents or caregivers are most exhausted. Infantile colic typically begins at about 2 to 3 weeks of age, reaches its peak at 2 months, begins to subside by 3 months, and is gone by 3 ½ to 4 months of age.
You would know if it was colic!!! Non-stop crying for about 2 or 3 hours at a time. Poor kids are in so much pain!!
I don’t know if this is true with all babies, but when my son was colicky, he would have crying spurts around the same time in the evening, and he would pull his legs up to his tummy.
Colic is defined as being inconsolable and incessant bouts of crying in an infant that amount to 3 or more hours everyday.
If you baby is crying but stops once you feed, change, burp, put to sleep etc…then it is not colic.
Its only when they cry for no apparent reason at all, then its colic
Colic is when the baby cries inconsolably for hours at a time! Every baby has a ”crying period” during the day but colic is for about 4 hours solid, non stop!
babies cry for certain reasons, diaper, hungry, tired, teething, colic, upset tummy, etc. but….colic is very evident. they dont stop crying, nothing soothes them. and it can go on for months. she may just be tired or want to be held if youve done everything possible.
im very thankful my daughter has not gone thru it yet. but your baby sounds normal.
You would know if it was colic. It would be non-stop crying for around 3 hours for at least 3 day for at least 3 weeks – and you would be going MENTAL!!!
Everybody is saying that “you would know if it was colic”, but I don’t necessarily agree with that statement.
There are many reasons why babies cry. Could be constipation, it could be they’re hungry or in some other type of pain. From what I’ve read on a few of your other posts, it does sound like Colic, BUT you should really check with your pediatrician and gauge his/her opinion.

Sounds like a problem but best would be to consult a doctor. Better to play on the safe side!
There is a good reason why we go nuts as parents when a baby starts yelling uncontrollably because of colic. Mother nature built our ears in such a way that we freak out when we hear that sound. So much so that the military at Guantanamo Bay would pipe the screams of a crying baby into the prisoner’s cells to torture them with it!! (True story!)
So indeed, parents deserve to know this and should not feel guilty in any way.

If you have seen to all of your baby’s needs and made sure they are all being met, it’s likely to be colic. In order to be sure, you should visit your doctor just in case there is some other medical problem.
My first child was colicky and the second still is. For both my milk supply was low so I used soy milk with the first one and she cried for 4 month, I also gave her colic pills, and nothing really helped her, so what I’m doing with this one that I can see the difference is giving her NUTRAMIGEN formula and Zantac every 8 hours and when she stars crying give her Gripe water with colic pills, since I started this her amount of crying is about 1 hour in total all evening compere to 3 to 4 hours. So let me know if your child get the same results, so we can pass the message to all the mother like us that need some help. In case that you are breastfeeding stop eating dairy, because my like one can not tolerate lactose and she only spit up ones, so since I use Nutramigen formula which is lactose free I can see the big difference even she goes party 2 or 3 times a day. Note: My first child now is two and my second became 2 month yesterday.
I have something else to say that I took my little one to the doctor and they made ultrasound to make sure that everything was ok and it was. So, she stared crying after every feeding that was when the doctor gave me zantac and Nutramigen formula which I have to say is very expensive but after having two girls with colic I will pay anything to see them better. I wich I could given zantac to the first one and this formula to the first one. None rof them really spit up , so I believe that colic is dry acid reflux so your child don’t spit up and you don’t give her zantac and also lactose intolerance and who knows something else.
