Why Use A Hospital Grade Breast Pump

March 11, 2010 by Jenny Belle

The most recommended breast pump available to new moms who are breast feeding is the hospital grade breast pump. The power of these pumps help to stimulate a moms breasts, and help the body as it raises prolactin hormones and oxytocin hormone levels. This helps to to produce the most breast milk.

There are personal breast pumps available for use, but hospital grade breast pumps are FDA approved to be used by more than one mother. A personal breast pump can only be used by a single mom.

Hospital pumps have built in precautions that help to preclude any type contamination. When used in a hospital, each mom is given her own collection kit.

Using the hospital pump is going to give you a better experience as they are stronger and more durable. This allows them to be more powerful, because their motors are stronger. Even a personal pump that costs the most money can not match one of these. The level of suction is very strong and this leads to great suction and successful pumping.

There is one drawback to these stronger and heavier pumps though. They are bulkier and therefore a little more difficult to take back and forth to work then a personal pump might be. However, they do have a three-year warranty versus a twelve month warranty of a personal pump. They are meant to last.

If you have a sick or premature baby, twin, need to increase your milk supply, or just need to begin lactating, hospital pumps are great for these types of situations. They are quite sturdy and are meant to be used often on a daily basis.

Hospital pumps are great for any type of pumping situation. They are sturdy and can be used daily and frequently. There are some special circumstances when a hospital pump is especially recommended. If you have a premature or a sick child, twin, you need to increase our milk supply, or you need to begin lactation.

The cost of these sturdy and efficient pumps is definitely more than a personal pump. However, they can be rented. Hospitals rent them as well as lactation consultants.

Different Ways of Potty Training

Did you know that there is a right way and a wrong way to potty train your toddler? Parents can always use some helpful hints and some ideas at this time their child’s life; I could have for sure.

Most children show signs of readiness to begin using the toilet as toddlers, usually between 18 months and 3 years of age. These signs include staying dry for at least 2 hours at a time, having regular bowel movements, being able to follow simple instructions, being uncomfortable with dirty diapers and wanting them to be changed, asking to use the potty chair, or asking to wear regular underwear.

Encourage, encourage, encourage is the most important thing to remember while you are trying to potty train your toddler. Remain focused and stay positive and never react too much on the negatives. You need to first get your toddler ready by getting your toddler used to the bathroom. When they get close encourage then by being truly positive or some parents use a sticker chart. Keep in mind to never over react to accidents, there will be some for sure. If you over react the whole potty training process could drag on longer then it needs to.

When you go to the bathroom take your toddler with you, they like to do as you do. If your toddler sees what you do when you go to the potty they will be more at ease when they try. Another idea is to use a stuffed animal or a doll and pretend that it is using the potty, some toddlers can learn from this also. Make certain that every time that your toddler uses the potty, reward them with lots of praise, stickers, or whatever you have decided.

When you decide to potty train your toddler keep in mind that it needs to be done in a stress free environment. Another thing is that your toddler will not potty train until they are ready and no sooner. If your toddler does not potty train right away, they may not be ready. Wait a few more weeks of this happens then try it again. Never be negative when potty training your toddler, they will pick up on it sooner or later.

For When Your Baby is Ready to Eat Solid Food

March 5, 2010 by Annie Stewart

Your baby should be ready to eat solid food around the age of six months. This is when your baby’s mouth changes and will now be able to manage swallowing the food. It is also a good time to start feeding your baby solid food when they have reached about double their birth weight. Before this your baby’s digestive system is not ready to digest solid food.

Growth spurts often account for the increased hunger in your baby and should not be taken as a sign that your baby needs solid foods added to her diet. Offer your baby more frequent nursing sessions and/or bottle feedings instead of solids; you will find that within a week or two, your baby is oftentimes over the growth spurt and back to feeding “as usual”.

Before you start feeding your baby solid food you first need to have many bibs, bowls and spoons that are not breakable, and a food processor.

The first solid food to try is baby rice, it is low in protein and it is not likely to cause any allergic reaction. Mix the rice with breast milk or formula and mix it thin so it will be easy for your baby to swallow. After your baby is used to the rice you can try to add some vegetables to it, then fruit. It is best to try vegetables first because your baby may not want to eat then if you first give your baby sweet fruit.

Any dairy made from cows milk needs to be avoided until your baby is one year old. After your baby has had cows milk for a month or more you can add other dairy products. It would be best to gradually get your baby onto solid food, wait at least twenty four hours in between trying any other new food, this will give you some input so if there is an allergic reaction.

Remember that you need to let your baby be in charge. You will be informed by your baby whether or not it needs a top up or if they are still hungry.

How To Calm Your Baby Down

March 2, 2010 by Veronica Carrillo

We know that a baby’s crying is a form of communication because it does not yet have the ability to use language to let us know what it wants. But there are times when a baby just keeps on crying no matter what we do to try to understand its needs at that moment. We go through all of the obvious needs such as to appease hunger, change diapers, sing, cradle, and walk, still nothing seems to help.

Perhaps diversion will help. Diversion such as a toy or mobile that resembles a human or human like animal hung safely over the baby’s crib, soft music, in some instances babies have been known to respond to the hum of a vacuum cleaner.

There have been some suggestions that baby’s respond to white noise and stop crying. A white noise machine can be purchased in any notions store or baby store.

During a tantrum, you may be tempted to shout at your toddler, or use words that are beyond the comprehension of a two-year-old. For starters, your child’s vocabulary is limited, and he will not understand most of what you are trying to communicate. Additionally, children emulate their parents: if Mommy or Daddy raise their voices when they are criticized or when they want something, this must be an acceptable form of behavior.

Let’s examine effective ways to deal with tantrums. Begin with trying to analyze the source of the inappropriate conduct. Tantrums often arise from frustration, which can spring from fatigue, hunger, an inability to communicate or not receiving gratification. If you believe your little one needs a nap or a lunch break, attend to these matters immediately. If you are that parent whose child is acting up in the grocery store, simply ignore the tantrum, as well as the dirty looks from the other shoppers. Chances are that once your toddler realizes his behavior is not getting the desired result, the drama will eventually cease. When your child is calmer, talk to him about asking for things in a polite way. Reinforce this suggestion whenever tantrums occur, and your toddler will eventually learn that tantrums do not deliver what he wants.

As they grow, children begin to assert their independence in many little ways. However, they also need boundaries. After a tantrum, tell your child in a matter-of-fact way that his conduct was out of the bounds of good behavior, and that there are consequences for such conduct. An effective consequence might be the loss of a favorite toy for a few days. You must be consistent with your discipline, or your child will realize the punishment was a one-time occurrence. Be sure to reward your child when he completes a day without whining or tantrums. Make sure he knows that his good behavior is the reason for the treat. If your child exhibits setbacks, be patient. He will eventually realize that being well behaved produces positive reinforcement from you. For additional information on dealing with tantrums

The Significance Of Watching Your Diet When Pregnant

February 27, 2010 by Aya Nagase

Maternity can be a wonderful thing although it can also be an incredibly stressful time for many women. Hormonal fluctuations are one thing, the tiredness as well as the change in body shape can be quite distressing for some.

Stretch marks, sagging boobs, and pants that simply fail to go on the way they would once. Most females just find it so tough to keep their self-esteem up when their bodies are under-going such significant changes.

Have you ever wondered how those Hollywood celebrities manage to get pregnant and still look amazing? These guys can make just about anything look sexy, can’t they? What’s their secret?

Before going on, one must always understand that gaining some weight during pregnancy is nature’s way in offering sustenance to your baby. Starting a diet program is not advisable!

Putting on an excessive amount of pounds might cause pregnancy complications as well as jeopardize a baby’s well being. So be mindful of that. Research have shown that women who put on a lot of weight during pregnancy usually end up working ten times harder than other women who maintained their weight all the way till child birth.

Say you decided to monitor your weight in the early stages, you’ll have a less difficult time afterward in getting your old body back.

If you’re in this situation it is advised that you start keeping track of your weight and eat healthy foods at reasonable quantities that are good for both you and your baby.

This is not a very hard thing to do, but you will need to have the will power to fight those cravings (which will come and go) and avoid eating junk food that is only going to make your weight maintenance goals even harder to reach.

Despite what you might have heard or read in magazines, getting some exercise will do you and your baby a world of good as well. You shouldn’t be doing any excessive activity or going for kick-boxing aerobics clearly, just stick to the light exercise like walking on a treadmill for instance.

Looking beautiful during as well as after maternity seriously isn’t impossible. If others have achieved it, then so can you. All that’s required is to stay focused and start your routine with little baby steps, and very soon you will develop a healthy lifestyle that requires very little effort from you to maintain.

Are you currently pregnant but have to attend a wedding? You may well like to have a look at the maternity wedding dresses homepage in which the publisher shares her opinions on the most appropriate looks.

Taking Care of Baby’s Skin

February 23, 2010 by Annie Stewart

There’s nothing quite like the soft, delicate skin of a baby. And nothing like a cranky infant irritated by diaper rash, cradle cap, or another skin condition. While your baby is perfect, your baby’s skin may not be. Many babies are prone to skin irritation in the first few months after birth.

A baby’s skin is a lot different than adult skin and to the extreme that it needs some different care. Infant skin is formed before they are born so it is in the dark and it is in liquid until the baby is born. The baby’s skin needs to adjust to the world. As people get older their skin also gets older and thickens, so therefore a baby’s skin is finer than paper and has a smooth texture. A baby’s skin has a lot of challenges to keep it’s moisture and to protect itself from the harsh environment.

It is very important to maintain the baby’s pH of the skin between 4-6. By doing this it ensures that the mantel of acid is supported. It is best to never use products that have animal products or any that have by-products. It is also a good idea to not use any fragrance because this can irritate the baby’s skin. It is best to make sure that the product that you are considering is tested by a pediatrician and a dermatologist also. There are some products that are out there that try to go over this recommendation by saying that they are hypoallergenic and recommended.

Anything that has vitamin A and E, Oat extract, Shea butter is great for baby’s skin. When you clean your baby make sure that you use a very mild soap.Sodium Laural Sulfate clogs pores so avoid it at all costs. However you choose to take care of baby’s skin, enjoy bath time and the great time after.

Foods To Eat To Have A Baby Girl

February 22, 2010 by Jerri Babs

You may be surprised to know that by eating the right foods you can influence the gender of your next baby.

The fact is the foods you eat can alter your body’s ph, and a woman who is trying to conceive a little girl can help tip the odds in favor of doing just that by lowering her bodily ph (specifically her vaginal ph at the time of conception) becoming more acidic.

You need to realize that it’s the man’s sperm that ultimately determines the gender of your baby. While the woman’s egg always carries the (xx) chromosome (all girl) the man’s sperm can carry the (xy) chromosome (produces a girl) or the (yy) chromosome (produces a boy.)

Although not very scientific, I will refer to these different sperm as the girl sperm and the boy sperm (for the sake of simplicity.)

The two sperm tend to differ physically, in that the girl sperm is the larger, hardier (lives longer) and a much slower swimmer of the two (takes longer to reach the egg.) Conversely the boy sperm is smaller, weaker (tends to die off quicker) but much faster to reach the egg.

Because of these differences, if you desire a baby girl you should try to lower your vaginal ph which will make survival very difficult for the weaker boy sperm. You can do this by eating foods that are acidic, and rich in calcium, and magnesium, while avoiding foods that are alkaline or high in potassium.

If you want to conceive a baby girl try to eat highly acidic foods such as corn, red meat, fish, and whole grains. Also add foods rich in calcium such as milk, yogurt, cheese, or other dairy products, and foods rich in magnesium like beans, legumes, and green leafy vegetables.

What foods to avoid if you want a baby girl? Any foods high in potassium like watermelon, spinach, potatoes, orange juice (believe it or not) most vegetables, and bananas. Also alcohol, and caffeine are to be avoided as well.

A quicker way to change your body’s ph (diet alone can take a few months, depending on your natural ph) is douching. Douching has been known to cause vaginal infections so if you want to try it please do so under your doctors care!

You can test your vaginal ph with test strips available online or at your local health food store. While trying to adjust your ph you should test often to give yourself the best chance of success. When you’re holding you beautiful little baby girl in your arms, you’ll know all your hard work was worth it!

If you are truly serious about having that little baby girl you want, you will need a guide to walk you through the entire process step by step. You can find these guides at my website, as well as other valuable insights in gender selection.

I truly hope you are successful in your gender selection efforts, but remember even if you fail you will still have a beautiful baby boy to love and nurture!

Baby Allergies – 3 Common Symptoms That Can Be Caused by Food

February 16, 2010 by Tess Rainey

This article will discuss 3 symptoms of baby allergies that could be caused by food. If you or your baby suffers from any of the symptoms below, you could be suffering from a hidden food allergy and not even know it.

1. Eczema: When your skin is dry and itchy you don’t usually associate this symptom with an allergy to food. But it is very common for this skin problem to be caused by having a hidden food allergy to a certain food, like wheat or even dairy.

Doing a little research to see which foods are common for causing issues like eczema and then strategically eliminating and reintroducing them, it is possible to cure eczema by removing them from your diet indefinitely.

2. Asthma: Asthma, just as with eczema, can be caused by eating a food that you have an allergy to. Sometimes it can be hard to figure out which foods are causing the problem, but you can do testing or food elimination diets to find out and then remove them to see if your symptoms improve.

By removing the food that is a problem for you it might even be possible to stop taking allergy medication or using an inhaler. Be sure to consult a physician before doing so.

3. Sinusitis: Having a stuffy nose is not normally linked to having a problem with a food like dairy. Allergens outside of the body are usually blamed for causing this problem, but even so, sinusitis can be caused by having a hidden food allergy. If that certain food is removed from your diet, the stuffy nose will clear up and usually fairly quickly within a few days or weeks of eliminating that food.

This article discussed baby allergies and 3 symptoms that can be caused by food. Eczema, asthma and even sinusitis all can be connected to having a sensitivity to a particular food. Even headaches can be linked to a problem with wheat, dairy or other foods. Hidden food allergies are very common, if your baby is suffering from the above symptoms, it could be caused by an allergic reaction to something in their diet.

Tips for Choosing a Video Baby Monitor

February 14, 2010 by Candace Martin

Having a video baby monitor can help a new parent ease their mind by being able to keep an eye on their child from another room. Whether your baby is napping or falls asleep at bedtime, having a video monitor will help new parents keep up with their usual activities and still be able to actually see their child, not just hear him when he cries.

A video baby monitor is composed of two parts; the transmitter and receiver units. The transmitter unit contains a camera, and is what will be placed in the room where the baby is. Keeping it in the vicinity of where the baby is will guarantee that the parents will be able to see and hear the baby cry or wake. The receiver unit is carried by the parent to every area of the house he or she goes to ensure that they are alerted by any of the noises made by their baby. With most receiver units, parents carry them clipped to their belt loop or on a lanyard.

The most popular choice in these monitors is the wireless unit. However, choosing a wired baby monitor is a great solution if there will be interference from other wireless devices in your home. The only downside is that the wired baby monitor needs to be installed. It will require someone who likes DIY projects, or else a contractor may need to be hired to install it. If you end up choosing a wired baby monitor, you will be more restricted to where you can locate the transmitter unit. Unfortunately, you cannot move it around freely like the wireless baby monitor unit.

When you install your video baby monitor, you should take into consideration the best height for the camera, so that you can see your infant from every angle, and get the best sound quality from the camera speakers as well as the hand held monitors.

Choosing the right baby monitor that works for your needs is important. Find out all the features of the baby monitor you’re interested in before making your final decision. Also find out the store policy in regards to the monitor being returned in case it’s not working well in your home.

Physically watching your baby around the clock is almost an impossibility. Fortunately, baby monitors have come along to help to fill the gap.

Fun Ideas for Baby Shower Invitations

February 7, 2010 by Kim Archer

A baby shower is a great event that heralds the coming of a new addition to the family. This occasion is usually announced through a baby shower invitation, sent to the guests, or a baby announcement. A baby shower invitation can say a lot of things about the event, other than the details about where and when it will be. Other details which may be specified or written on the baby shower invitation wording are the theme or motif of the shower, how many babies are to be expected, and the gender of the baby.

There are many different themes for a baby shower which can be used also for the baby shower invitation. These themes are usually what dictate the general appearance and ambiance of the event. Themes can be anything from a color to an animated character to an animal. Color themes are usually blue for boys and pink for girls. Some other colors for boys are green and brown while girls usually have yellow or lavender. In some cases, the baby shower invitation may be dominantly made up of the color theme to indicate the gender of the soon to come baby. Some colors complement each other and are often used for the entire theme for decorations and the baby shower invitation as well as the giveaways.

Invitations can include actual baby bottle invitations with a tag attached to it with the printed details. Baby bottles can be filled with Hershey’s Kisses chocolate or Reese’s pieces. This unique baby shower invitation idea can also be done in the form of baby food containers filled with chocolates or hard candies. Popular food containers are the Gerber brand, the smaller the better. Expectant parents can get in touch with other parents with babies who are eating soft or semi solid food and ask for the containers.

Cartoon or animated characters are very popular themes for a baby shower to be used for the decorations and the baby shower invitation. Barbie or Tinkerbell is sometimes used for a shower for a baby girl. For baby boys, superhero characters are popular. Some well used characters are the Peanuts gang with Snoopy, Baby Looney Tunes, Precious Moments and many others. Even ordinary images which are not from popular shows or characters are used for a baby shower invitation, such as a stork or cartoon baby items. Baby bottles, bibs, diapers and diaper pins are just a few of the many things that can be used as a motif for the baby shower invitation.

Cards often have the announcement on top and the finer details printed at the bottom with regards to the venue and the date of the baby shower. Folded ones have the announcement on the front and the details when the card is opened. The preferences of the parent or parents are often followed for the baby shower invitation wording.

You might think that hand made baby shower invitations will be a huge hassle, and this might be the case. If you are planning the entire baby shower and doing everything alone, then you should probably look for a printable baby shower invitation kit instead. These are easier kits than hand made invitations. You can simply upload something on your computer, type in your information, and print them out.

A Couple Of Useful Tips About Baby Photography

February 3, 2010 by Adriana Noton

Babies are arguably the most popular targets for photos and unfortunately can be the most difficult to capture on film. You need a lot of skill and patience in order to get a successful baby shot. One thing that you see often in such photos is red eye. Many people think that in order to capture everything well on film that they need to use a flash. This isn’t the case. In terms of babies, natural light is better than bright, glaring, artificial light.

They move, they fight, they cry, and if they’re very upset, they poop. As a result baby photography takes not only a lot of patience, but a lot of skill. However, even if you’re not a professional you should be able to take some very good photos by taking in these few simple suggestions. The first thing is to avoid using the flash on your camera.

However if you can’t avoid red eye a lot of cameras have a red eye reduction function and if yours does not there is free baby photography software is available on the internet that can fix the problem for you. Another common issue is the blurring of images.

If your camera doesn’t have one, there is software available that will take care of the problem for you. Another thing to watch out for is blurring. Like I said earlier, most babies don’t like sitting still for pictures and as a result most of them come out looking blurry. Now you can take pictures of your baby acting naturally with the help of a high iso speed camera and big aperture.

That means that backgrounds with too many things going on can overshadow your subject. To avoid that you can either zoom in or move closer to your baby. You can also keep them dressed in light, solid-colored clothes because patterns and ‘heavy’ colors can distort the baby’s face and eyes. Too much color, whether on your baby or off is bad for the overall image and you should work to avoid it.

Speaking of effects, you can try some very simple things to make the baby picture fascinating and unique. Instead of using the baby as the main focus, you can instead pay more attention to the toys, foods, blankets, and etc that make up the baby’s everyday life.

Another interesting thing hat can be done is taking a photo of the baby while they are doing one of the many strange poses or facial expressions that they are famous for. Or bring in the use of mirrors and blurred backgrounds, both of which work very well in highlighting a baby’s possible worldview.

Want to be the most fashionable mother to be around? Then you’ll need the right maternity clothes.

Selecting a Digital Baby Monitor

January 26, 2010 by Candace Martin

Of course, you want to make sure that your baby is protected and watched at all times. And, even when you’re at home with your little one, there are still several times throughout the day where you may not be in the same room with your baby. This is why you’ll need to start shopping for digital baby monitors, and you can do this without having to leave your home.

The main reason that parents get digital baby monitors is so they can complete other chores around the house while their baby is sleeping or playing in another room. You will need to ensure that the monitor you select is not on the same frequency as other electric devices that you own in order for you to be able to know when your infant is crying and needs you. This is the rationale behind the video baby monitor, which is fast becoming a popular choice. So, if you are unable to hear your infant due to technical issues, you will still see him/her on your monitor, and be able to respond appropriately if the infant needs you. This option is more costly. However, users believe you get what you pay for.

If you opt for the audio digital baby monitor, both one-way and two-way models are available. Determine which feature meets your needs. If you only need to be able to discern baby’s weeping or activity, a one-way monitor will do the trick. If you choose a two-way monitor, not only will you hear any sounds your infant makes, but your infant can also hear you. This might be nice if you are unable to respond immediately to your baby, but want to reassure him or her with your voice. Older children, in particular, might benefit from this feature.

As you compare digital baby monitors, you will want to consider how big your house is. The larger your home, the higher the frequency required for clear sound quality. Also, homes with more thickly insulated walls will benefit from the higher capacity that accompanies a higher frequency monitor. This will increase the range of the monitor, so that you can hear your child’s cry clearly–even if you’re on another story of the house. Portability is critical. You need to be able to carry the monitor throughout your home so it can accompany you on any task necessary. That way you can still keep an ear out for your baby.

Online retailers offering monitors are plentiful. If you prefer to shop from the comfort of your couch, you can still find the model that fits your needs. Amazon.com has a great selection, as well as reviews from past customers, and Overstock.com will offer you great prices on monitors from trusted name brands.

Baby monitors have made life so much easier for parents these days. Finding the best baby monitor for your needs is the only hard part, because there are so many to choose from!

Why Organic Baby Clothes Are Safer Than Their Counterpart

January 14, 2010 by Chris Channing

The organic craze started with food and has been seeping into other industries- but is the industry of baby clothes a right fit? Organic baby clothes are being sold everywhere, so it seems, and the real benefits of buying organic clothing are intriguing to read about.

Since most clothes will have trace amounts of pesticides in them, you could link a new rash on a baby’s skin to the purchase of a new clothing item. If you do notice that a baby is getting an unexplained rash, and a physician has declared it wasn’t anything too serious, you should start to look into organic baby clothes immediately. They won’t have the irritants that other clothes do.

Even if the baby clothing you buy doesn’t have harmful pesticides, it is likely using a dye that is derived from a chemical. Organic baby clothing uses natural dyes that come from natural resources. Therefore, organic baby clothing is safe to use if you suspect your baby of having an allergic reaction to the dye that is in your baby’s clothing.

The scary part about the ordeal with pesticides is that the chemicals can very well be carcinogens. Carcinogens are substances that have been known to cause cancer. Studies show that even mild exposure to pesticides at an early age will result in a greater chance at developing defects such as cancer. Concerned parents should make the switch to organic baby clothing to prevent taking a risk with the possibility of carcinogens and pesticides.

Some harmful chemicals that, if present in the baby clothing, can be washed out. The sad news is that petroleum products in the clothing won’t come out in a single wash, and sometimes not in multiple washes. Petroleum products stay within the cotton and other materials for many washes, leaving your baby unprotected against irritants. Buying organic baby clothing is the best solution to solving the problem, as they will not contain hard to remove substances that are based from petroleum.

Even though the main focus on organic baby clothing is the baby that wears the clothing, the farms that grow the cotton are in the spotlight as well. Environmental concerns are of course present, and the lack of pesticides does a world of good for the environment. Otherwise, cotton grown with pesticides will wash the chemicals into water sources and pollute the environment. This leads to destruction of ecosystems and even pollution of drinking water than everyday people consume.

Final Thoughts

A wide selection of baby clothing can be found on the Internet. Just be sure that what you are buying is indeed organic, and not created in a factory. That way you will save the health of your baby and be one step closer in giving it a fulfilling youth.
