There is much excitement when you and your partner learn you will be having your first baby. With so much to prepare, the pregnancy can go by rather quickly. As your body prepares to go through such dramatic change, it’s important to be aware of what to expect and the best ways to maintain optimum health for both you and your baby. While there’s no way to find out everything that might happen, especially since every pregnancy is unique, it’s still a good idea to follow basic guidelines for wellness.

As your body changes to accommodate your growing baby, you might notice discomfort and exhaustion. It’s common for the expectant mother to feel overwhelmed at times with the emotion of the experience. That’s why it’s crucial to have pre-natal visits with your doctor to make sure everything is progressing normally and everything is being done to keep you and your baby happy and healthy.

Most women gain between 25 and 30 pounds, and it’s important to keep an eye on weight gain as too much weight gain can indicate problems like gestational diabetes. It’s also recommended that all expectant moms are on a regimen of pre-natal vitamins to give their body the extra nutrients it needs to accommodate for the baby.

A balanced diet is also a critical matter as you prepare to have your first baby. Without proper nutrients, you and your baby won’t be as healthy as you need to be. Exercising about 30 minutes a day will also keep your energy level up and keep your weight right where it should be.

As you approach your due date and prepare to welcome your first baby into the world, there can be a flood of emotions. It’s important to have everything prepared for baby’s homecoming well before your due date, as it can be a little overwhelming to deal with later in the pregnancy.

Baby Care Basics – Some Handy Tips

Bringing home your newborn can present a hectic, stressful experience for any parent. Knowing a few baby care basics and preparing for the homecoming can make the transition much easier for you and baby.

Proper Clothing

A baby’s metabolism is much slower than ours. Since the first year of their lives will be a sedentary one, with very little movement, they have the potential to get cold even on the warmest days. Also, with messy feeding times and frequent bowel movements, you’ll need to have several sets of clothing available to keep them clean and comfortable. Cotton provides a comfy, non-allergenic fabric that is breathable and easily cleaned (don’t get fancy and stick to your baby care basics). While cheaper fabrics like polyester can be used for warm top layers, cotton and/or fleece should be used underneath to keep your baby’s skin from becoming irritated.

Diaper Changes

Diaper changes will make up the majority of your time and this is an important consideration for any parent. There are a variety of great brands that are all suitable in disposable form. Consider “going green” with your diaper choice. Stocking up on cotton, reusable diapers will make you feel great about the environment and save you money on garbage tags. Washable diapers are also more breathable and comfortable for your newborn.

Feeding Time

Set up scheduled feeding times. This is done within the first few weeks of your baby’s life. Try to feed them at the same time every day and don’t overfeed them. Feeding on a schedule is baby care basics 101, along with frequent burping to prevent excess gas.

Talk Time

While it may come naturally to some parents; make sure you always talk to your baby. Not will it provide a calming, soothing effect for them — it’s also crucial to their development. The more you talk with your baby, the faster they themselves will start to form words and communicate.

If you have ever had a new baby on the way, then you know how important it is to scrutinize every product you buy first and if you are expecting your first baby, you are probably even more confused about what to buy. You don’t want to invest in items that turn out to be pretty useless or sometimes even dangerous for your baby. The best way to make sure you buy quality baby items are to read informative baby product reviews before you buy them.

Picking out a safe baby bed that is also very functional is important. Convertible baby beds are so popular these days because they can be used from infancy to adulthood. Choosing a high chair that has great safety features is also important, but you want one that adjusts to several different heights and positions so you can use it for the longest length of time as the baby grows. Play pens are a wonderful thing to have. It allows the baby to play freely inside while parents are busy. Buying a play pen that travels easy is what most busy parents want also.

A bathwater thermometer is nice to have so you get the water temperature right every time. Even something as common as a diaper rash paste or cream can be confusing when trying to decide which one will work the best. Diaper rash is very common and you might end up going through a lot of this stuff.

These days, no parent wants to be without a baby monitor. They are so great to have when you can not be in the room with the baby. However today, parents don’t just want to be able to hear the baby, but they want to be able to see it too. The new digital wireless audio video baby monitors work so good. Nothing can give a parent more peace of mind that being able to see and hear their baby at all times anywhere they might be in the house.

Choosing a safe baby gate is just as important as any of these other items. A baby gate will give you peace of mind and allow you to move about the house while you keep the crawling or walking baby safely confined to one room. When you spend half of your day chasing the baby from room to room, you get exhausted and nothing gets done. You can bet as soon as they become mobile, babies are very hard to keep up with. How important is it to you to make sure you only buy the best and the safest products for your baby? It is the most important thing for most parents and you are probably no exception. How can you know for sure how well some baby products work? How can you be sure they have been fully tested for safety most of all? The people that will tell the truth faster than anyone else are the parents that have already bought products and have tried them. This is the source where you really want to get your information from.

They might be made by parents that have already first hand tested a product or by researchers that compare baby product pros and cons to one another. It is a good way to get the honest answers you want and help you decide what purchases you most need to make for your infant.

Babies do a lot of sleeping and when they sleep you have to do other things that you can’t always do while they are awake. A dependable baby monitor has become a parent’s extra eyes and ears. You can go with an old fashioned model that only allows you to hear the baby in their room or you can go a little more high tech and get a digital wireless audio video baby monitor. With one of these you can hear the baby and see the baby no matter where you are in the house. What about the baby bed where they sleep? Do you buy a standard crib or get a convertible baby bed that can be changed to suit the growth of the baby over the coming years?

Most parents find that the list of things they need for a baby has been almost endless by the time they head off to school. As soon as you can stop using a bathwater thermometer and a changing table, you are ready for electrical outlet covers. Playpens and baby gates keep them safe when they are big enough to get about. High chairs and exercisers serve their own special purposes too. Will you be able to know every product inside and out before you buy it?

There are a lot of different baby product manufacturers out there from food, to diapers, to toys. They are for the most part reliable, but even the biggest names sometimes have a problem with one model of something or the other. Learn to investigate all of the things you buy for your baby before you test run them with your child. It is the best way to keep them happy, healthy and safe all at the same time which is no easy thing for any parent.

The Perfect Treatments For Morning Sickness

Some 90% of expectant moms suffer from morning sickness in the first development stages of pregnancy. Nausea as well as morning sickness do not pose great concerns, unless it is very serious. Really serious vomiting might lead to depletion of nourishing elements and thus could require that you see your health care professional.

Though called morning sickness, this could be experienced during all parts of the day. Becoming uneasy, fatigued or perhaps tired, decreased hunger, morning sickness and headaches can begin first thing in the morning. The signs and symptoms sometimes continue all through a day and occasionally just for a few hours.

To be able to overcome these ailments, there is no requirement to have normal medicine, since they can be manipulated successfully by simple home treatments. Drugs are unsafe during maternity as there are possibilities of harming a developing child. Some easy and efficient home remedies could possibly reduce suffering.

- Definitely do not hurry while coming out of bed. Step out of your bed relaxed and at ease.

- Get proper rest throughout the day, as well as overnight.

- Avoid particular aromas that cause morning sickness.

- Have dried cookies or maybe dried cereal products when you wake up.

- Avoid lots of spicy and oily foods, which may produce acid reflux disease and digestive system problems.

- Sensing particular oils like lemons, cuts down on morning sickness.

- Digest along with your desire and going just for brief frequent meals rather than big portions at once.

- Drink peppermint flavored tea and ginger, assists in decreasing morning sickness.

- Eliminate drinking lots of liquid at once. Liquids must always be consumed in small quantities all throughout a day to prevent dryness.

- Taking small quantities of healthy proteins snacks is better than an unfilled stomach, because this makes morning sickness worse.

There are absolutely no worries, concerning morning sickness. Yet, when ignored it could eventually cause weakness along with nutrient insufficiency in the initial trimester of conceiving.

Baby Crip Bedding – An Overview

June 12, 2010 by

Fitting out your baby’s nursery can seem like a big task, and it can be. You need everything to be special and perfect for your newborn, so that you baby’s room is an inviting place for you and your baby to be.

Many people like to try and make everything match, using colors and themes. Bedding makes up a big part of this, so it may even be the ideal place to start when you are designing the nursery.

Remember, your baby, at least to begin with, is going to be spending lots of time in bed, so you need to choose baby crib bedding that will be comfortable and practical. If it looks nice too, then that’s even better. But your baby’s comfort needs to come first.

Generally, your next options are whether to buy each item individually, or just buy a bedding set. Buying a baby bedding set is often a good option, as it generally works out to be cheaper than buying each piece individually. Also, you don’t have to worry about whether or not everything will look co-ordinated, because it automatically is.

Usually a baby crib bedding set will include a baby blanket, cot sheet and also a quilt. You don’t need a pillowcase, as it’s not recommended that baby use a pillow.

Now you can start to look at individual designs. If you know your baby’s gender, then you may want to select something appropriate. It is a bit stereotyped, but generally girls have pink and boys have blue. If you are keen to be surprised on the day your baby is born, then you will want to go for something more neutral, like yellow, white or green.

Besides having plain sheets, you might prefer to find baby bedding with a theme. Again, if you know the gender of the baby, you would look for fairies, butterflies or princesses for girls, and fire engines, trucks or trains for boys. For a non-gender specific theme, check out cartoon characters like Winnie the Pooh (my personal favorite!), teddy bears or zoo animals.

When you can’t find something you like in the marketplace, don’t despair – you can always make your own sheets and blankets. For those who are less enthused about sewing, perhaps a family member can make them, or you can even pay someone to have them customized. Doing it yourself is another way to make sure that your baby’s bedding is unique.

And when you’re really stuck for ideas, you are able to hire an experienced person who can design the whole nursery for yourself, and choose appropriate baby bedding as part of the service.

In the end, make sure the bedding you have chosen feels safe and practical. All other considerations such as design and color are secondary. So if you ask right questions when you go to the baby store, you will be confident you’ve made a great choice.

Essential Baby Equipment – What You Need For A Happy Baby & Mother

May 9, 2010 by

Essential Baby Equipment covers a variety of areas when it comes to looking after your baby. In all honesty my idea of essential is completely different to most. I never had a crib or a changing station or a nursing chair. In fact my most expensive purchase was reusable diapers.

However despite my lack of items, I do consider some items to be essential for a baby and many people don’t own these items at all. This is my list:

Clothing – Every baby needs a lot of clothing because they can make a huge mess. I bought my items from ebay, had hand me downs from when my husband was a little boy and also bought organic clothing for my son. My son had acid reflux issues for a good few months when he was first born and this ment I was changing him every five minutes. Having lots of clothing on hand was essential for me, otherwise my son would have been naked or dirty all the time. I find second hand a good option and you get bundles of clothing very cheaply on ebay or even try out charity shops.

Car Seat – This is something that you will need as soon as your baby is born if you have your baby at hospital. You will want to get them home safe and sound.

Baby Sling – I found this absolutely essential. I have used it nearly everyday and when my son was born he was very colicky and he spent most of his time in it. I took him for walks in the sling and around the house that helped him stay calm and feel soothed. I have also found this great for when he is older too but now he is 2 he seems to be in and out of arms so I tend to just carry him instead!

Muslins/Cloths – In relation to my son’s acid reflux, a lot of mop cloths were needed! I was lucky to have lots of spare from buying lots for my son’s diapers. Try to get a good back up stock of mops. Babies are inevitably messy little things and this will save you have to do washing everyday. Cloths are also great for mopping up once your baby is grown so don’t think this is a wasteful expense – it isn’t!

Nursing Pads – Unless you want to have milk all over your tops and have to keep changing your tops, nursing pads are a must. At first I found I needed a continuous supply!

Breast Pump – This is on this list because for me, it was absolutely essential from the get go. I managed to get Mastisis as a result of my breasts being too full and had to go buy a pump to help relieve it. I also found that the pump allowed me to get some milk ready so my husband could feed our son while I got much needed rest (I did this in the first 6 weeks, although it is recommended you don’t use a pump this early as it may cause problems for your baby and their ability to latch).

Nutritionists of today practically universally commend fish oils. Why? There is more and more study coming out regarding the benefits of omega-3 fish oils every day. The body of science that has developed is incredibly robust and well acknowledged from Nutritionist to MD’s. This science involves encouraging findings for Omega-3′s effectiveness on well being concerns ranging from reducing joint inflexibility to reducing the danger of stroke but it is also extremely beneficial for strong people to add Omegas to their daily routine and particularly important for pregnant women and children.

For a large amount of healthy people, omega-3 fish oils play a fundamental role in a large amount body functions. They are especially needed for women who are pregnant or thinking on the subject of having a baby because they make up the membranes of more or less every cell in the body. There are also new scientific studies suggesting a link between a decrease in certain types of food allergies and infant eczema. Now many researchers think that mother’s should be taking Omega-3′s well previous to getting pregnant, as the fetus seems to be getting a lot of the DHA in particular, from the mother’s tissue stores. These essential fatty acids are also crucial for expecting mothers because of their impact in numerous areas of health.

So, if you are already eating well, taking good care of your well being (as well as taking a daily multi vitamin), Omega-3′s are a smart option. You will want to look for products that contain both EPA and DHA with a bare minimum daily dose of 1000mg combined. Also note that EPA and DHA can be found in flax seed and DHA can be found from algal sources for those interested in keeping a vegan diet.

Baby Showers And The Delight Of The Pregnant Mother To Be

May 5, 2010 by

Baby showers are considered to be the most appropriate opportunity to honor the expectant mother. In a typical baby shower there will be food, games and activities. The shower often takes place just a few months before the baby is born. To host a successful shower party, you need the cooperation of the mother.

The purpose of a shower party is to honor the expectant mother and her child. This is a chance for family members and relatives to gather and enjoy their gathering. A shower is also a good opportunity for friends and workmates to share the happiness with the parents.

The expectant mother will receive gifts and supplies from guests. These gifts will be used for, and by, the new baby. Before the party, the mother gives a list of what she and her baby need. The guests will then buy gifts based on what the mother needs.

There are parties for couples and there are parties for women only. You must therefore first determine the type of party you want to do.

If your party has only female attendees, you should choose only womanly activities like tea parties and spa showers. The party will be decorated with a main color. This color can be pink or blue depending on which gender the new child is.

There are also showers for men only. These showers tend to have sporting activities. If the parents are having their second child, they have had enough toys and clothes for the baby. Therefore, they may want to celebrate a party where all the guests bring books to build a library for the child.

The baby shower normally takes place a few months before the child is born. However, there are showers that take place after the mother has given birth to the infant. This way of doing has the advantage of allowing the guests to see the baby and buy gifts accordingly.

Invitations should be sent four to six weeks before the occasion. Don’t send invitations too close to the event because there are chances that some guests cannot make it. If you want to invite guests from far away towns, you should notice them even earlier so that they have to time to arrange their job and prepare gifts.

Food and drink plays an important part of the success of a shower party. You should prepare food for all the expected guests and also for a few unexpected ones too – just in case! Baby showers will be a great joy for not only the parents but also any guests attending the event.

Hosting a baby shower can be a lot of work, but it can be rewarding as well. By searching at your local library, in magazines and by visiting our baby showers website, you should be able to find enough activities to keep everyone occupied and happy.
