What is the best thing to use for diaper rash with cloth diapers?
My daughter spent the better part for 5 months on antibiotics for ear infections which caused her to have lots of diaper rashes. Now that she doesn’t need antibiotics since she had tubes placed she is left with very sensitive skin. I have decided to switch to cloth diapers for her because I have heard that they wont cause her to rash as easily. But I have also heard that you can’t use most diaper rash creams with cloth diapers. What is the best thing to use for rash while using cloth diapers?

i have always used butt paste
when in a bind I used to use vaseline, anything to put a barrier between the skin and moisture
I grew up with parents who took in newborn foster children for most of my life. By the age of 16 I had assisted my parents in the raising and placement of over 200 newborn children. I was an expert diaper slinger at a very young age. My mother used many tricks in rearing these kids. When it came to diaper rash, her little favorite was “corn starch”. It works very well, just dust it on as you would regular baby powder… I think she even mixed it with powder at times. Also , for a cream type barrier use ‘zinc oxide’ and leave her diaper off for a period of time. Hope this helps her poor little butt.
I think one of the best things to do is give the child a bath with baking soda, and let them soak in it for a while (if they like the bath).
But if you really want to use diaper cream the website below has a really good article on it.
We use cloth, but sometimes when we are out we find it easier to use fake diapers (as we call them). Once in a great while our son will get a teeny bit of diaper rash, so I really think this is the way to go to avoid diaper rash. Once our son did get a major rash on his bum, but he was sick at the time, so I think that had a lot to do with it. You’re right in that you’re not supposed to use diaper cream as it affects the absorbency of the cloth. However, we have used it, and haven’t had any problems. It does stain the cloth though, thankfully most of my liners are a tan color anyway and not white, so we don’t see it. When you use cloth you will have to “strip” them every once in awhile, that just means to wash them a couple of times in a row without any soap. I would think that you can use diaper cream and cloth diapers to get your little one over the rash, then strip the diapers and then go back to no diaper cream. Hope that helps.
The rashes should be few and far between, but if we do get a rash I use bum butter from Ewe need it. It works great with the diapers and won’t gunk them up.
Before you consider a diaper cream while using cloth diapers you need to put a liner between the baby and the diaper. Diaper rash creams get on the cloth diapers and create a barrier. This in turn will decrease the absorbency of the diaper. I like the rice biodegradable liners. Kushies and Bummis both make these.
