Once in a great while our son will get a teeny bit of diaper rash, so I really think this is the way to go to avoid diaper rash. Once our son did get a major rash on his bum, but he was sick at the time, so I think that had a lot to do with it. You're right in that you're not supposed to use diaper cream as it affects the absorbency of the cloth. However, we have used it, and haven't had any problems. It does stain the cloth though, thankfully most of my liners are a tan color anyway and not white, so we don't see it. When you use cloth you will have to "strip" them every once in awhile, that just means to wash them a couple of times in a row without any soap. I would think that you can use diaper cream and cloth diapers to get your little one over the rash, then strip the diapers and then go back to no diaper cream. Hope that helps. By the age of 16 I had assisted my parents in the raising and placement of over 200 newborn children. I was an expert diaper slinger at a very young age. My mother used many tricks in rearing these kids. When it came to diaper rash, her little favorite was "corn starch". It works very well, just dust it on as you would regular baby powder... I think she even mixed it with powder at times. Also , for a cream type barrier use 'zinc oxide' and leave her diaper off for a period of time. Hope this helps her poor little butt.
